Service checks and adjustments

Check of a free wheeling of a steering wheel
Start up the engine.
Set the steering wheel to the position corresponding to the straight-ahead position.
Apply force 5 N (approximately 0.5 kg) by turning the steering wheel.

Measurement freewheel steering wheel
Fig. 4.1. Measurement freewheel steering wheel

Measure a free wheeling around the circumference of the steering wheel (Fig. 4.1).
Free running (play) of the steering wheel should be 30 mm.
If the free play exceeds the specified value, check the condition of the steering shaft and the tips of steering drafts.

Check the angle of rotation of the wheels
Install the front-wheel drive vehicle on the rotating device for measuring the turning radius.
Measure the angle of the front wheels.
Rated angle of rotation of the inner wheel - 40,7 ? ? 2 ?; outer wheel - 32,4 ?.
If the measured value is not within the standard, adjust the length of the track rod.

Checking the return of the steering wheel
Check the return of the steering wheel and ensure that the following conditions are met:
- The force applied to the steering wheel must be the same for the left and right sides of the passage of both moderate and sharp turns;
- If the steering wheel is rotated 90 ? and held in this position with the two, and vehicle speed of 20-30 km / h, when releasing the steering wheel must return to the neutral position in the zone.

A WARNING
If the steering wheel is turned quickly, the force for its rotation can be considerably larger than usual. This is not a fault, especially at idle, since the delivery rate is reduced.

Check starting torque ball joint rod end

Using a puller (1) to release the ball rod end from the knuckle
Fig. 3.73. Using a puller (1) to release the ball rod end from the knuckle

Remove the cotter pin and unscrew a few turns nut trunnion ball joint tie rod to the steering knuckle. 09567-34000 stripper squeeze out a pin of the ball joint from the knuckle (see. Fig. 3.73).

WARNINGS
Secure the cord puller for the next element of the car.
Loosen the nut of the hinge, but do not remove it completely.

Several times in the hand shake trunnion ball joint.

Measuring starting torque ball joint rod end
Fig. 4.2. Measuring starting torque ball joint rod end

Screw the two nuts on the finger of a ball joint and measure the starting torque (Fig. 4.2).
Starting torque ball joint - 0.5-2.5 Nm.
If the starting torque exceeds the standard value, replace the tie rod end.
Even if the initial torque is less than the lower limit, the ball joint can be used in the future, if it does not stick and does not have a big play.

Check the fluid level in the power steering reservoir
Place the vehicle on a level surface.
Start up the engine and the vehicle is stationary several times without stopping, turn the steering wheel to and fro to warm the liquid to a temperature of 50-60 ? C.
With the engine running at idle speed a few times, turn the steering wheel fully from lock to lock.
Make sure the liquid in the tank no foam or bubbles.

The difference in the level of liquid in a tank during operation (a) and idle (b) engine
Fig. 4.3. The difference in the level of liquid in a tank during operation (a) and idle (b) engine

Stop the engine and check the difference in the level of liquid in a tank at the working and the engine stopped (Fig. 4.3).

WARNINGS
If the fluid level differs by more than 5 mm, remove the air from the hydraulic power steering.
If the fluid level has increased dramatically after stopping the engine, must also remove the air.
Incomplete removal of air causes rattling sound and noise in the pump in fluid flow control valve, which reduces the life of the pump.

Substitution fluid in the power steering
Lift the front of the car and fix it on reliable supports.
Disconnect the return hose from the fluid reservoir and a suitable plug, close the hole in the tank.
Attach a vinyl hose to the disconnected return hose, and drain the liquid in the container.
Disconnect the high voltage from the ignition coil. When the starter several times intermittently, turn the steering wheel all the way left and right to drain the fluid.
Reconnect the return hose and fill it with the recommended fluid.
Remove air from hydraulic power steering.
The hydraulic system of the power steering fluid used PSF-3.
The liquid volume - about 1.0 liters.

Removal of air from hydraulic system of the power steering
Disconnect the high voltage from the ignition coil, and then when the starter at intervals (15-20 s) 5-6 Turn the steering wheel fully to the left and then the right.

WARNINGS
During removal of air blow off some fluid to the reservoir until the level does not become smaller than the lower position of the filter.
If the air is removed when the engine is idling, the air can be dissolved in a liquid. Remove air only while cranking the engine

Connect the high voltage and start up the engine at idle.
Turn the steering wheel to the left and to the right until the liquid in the tank will not contain air bubbles.

A WARNING
Do not hold the steering wheel with more than 10 full lock in either direction.

Make sure that no liquid milky, and the liquid level reaches the lower mark.
Make sure that when you turn the steering wheel left and right liquid level has changed slightly.

WARNINGS
If the liquid level changes significantly, then you must repeat the venting.
If the liquid level rises sharply after stopping the engine, the air remains in the system.
If there is air in the system, the pump can be heard tinkling, the control valve can also be the cause of unusual noises. Caught in the air reduces the service life of the pump and other components.

Checking the belt drive power steering pump
Check the belt tension, for which press the belt with a force of 98 N at a point equidistant from pulleys and measure a belt deflection.
Rated belt deflection with regular checks - 11,5-15,3 mm, a new belt - 8,8-11,0 mm.
On cars with engines V6 2,7 liter adjustment provides automatic belt tensioning mechanism.
On vehicles with a DOHC engine to adjust the belt tension, loosen the adjusting bolt tensioning mechanism and then re-tighten.

Check of the pressure created by the pump

Connecting a special device with an adapter 09572-22100 (1) and a pressure gauge for measuring the pressure created by the pump
Fig. 4.4. Connecting a special device with an adapter 09572-22100 (1) and a pressure gauge for measuring the pressure created by the pump

Disconnect the pressure hose from the pump, then connect the device with a special adapter (09572-22100) and a pressure gauge between the oil pump and pressure hose, as shown in Fig. 4.4.
Remove air from the hydraulic system of the power steering, start up the engine and turn the steering wheel several times in one and the other side to the liquid temperature rose to about 50 ? C.
Increase the engine speed to 1000 min -1 .
Close the gate valve is a special device to measure the fluid pressure and compare with the nominal value.
Nominal pressure created by the pump when the valve is closed a special device must be 1136 psi (80 kgf / cm 2 ).

A WARNING
Do not keep more than 10 closed with a gate valve special tool.

Remove the special tool, connect the discharge hose to the pump and tighten the hose coupling nut torque 55-65 Nm.
Remove air from hydraulic power steering.
