| 1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal. |
| 2. Disconnect the crankcase ventilation valve and air hoses from the valve cover. |
| 1.6-liter models |
| 3. Disconnect spark plug wire from the clips. |
 | 4. Remove the two upper timing belt cover bolts (SOHC) and loosen the lower timing belt cover bolts. |
 | 5. Remove the valve cover bolts (SOHC). |
| 6. Remove the valve from the cylinder head. |
| 7. Inspect the cover gasket, replace if necessary. |
| 1.8-liter models |
| 8. Mark the spark plug wires and disconnect them from the candles. |
| 9. Remove the ignition distributor together with wires. |
| 10. Remove the screws of the top cover timing belt and remove the cover. |
| 11. Remove the valve cover bolts and remove the cover. |
