The side airbags are located in the front seat backrest cushions. You can identify them by the inscription <AIRBAG> at the top of the back of the seat backs (Fig. 1.19).
The side airbags together with safety belts additionally protects the upper body of the driver and front seat passenger in the event of severe side collisions.
The side airbag system does not work:
- During a frontal impact;
- At weak side impacts;
- When striking the rear of the vehicle;
- Rollover.
The side airbag system in any case not a substitute for seat belts and an important element of passive safety.
The side airbag system comprises:
- Electronic control system and control its operational readiness (control);
- Airbags on the sides of the rear of the front seat backrests;
- Warning lamp on the instrument cluster.
When a severe side impact air bag is triggered by the collision.

When combined special types of collisions can work both front and side airbags (Fig. 1.20).

A WARNING
All work associated with side airbags, as well as assembly and disassembly device of the system while doing other work (for example, when removing the front seats) should be carried out only at the service center Audi.
In the front seat passenger and the seat of the airbag should not be placed people, animals, or various objects. In addition, the doors can not be attached to various accessories such as cup holders.
On hooks for clothes can be hung only small and light things. The pockets for small things you can not store heavy or sharp-edged objects.
The sides of the seatbacks can not be exposed to large forces, such as strong shock or depression, you may damage the system side airbags.
In no case can not be put on the front seat covers that are not recommended by the manufacturer. Otherwise, during the opening of the side airbags of a protective effect will be significantly limited.
Pillows subjected to the critical load in an accident must be replaced.
