Engine start

Ignition Switch
and steering lock

Ignition Switch
Fig. 1.67. Ignition switch: 1 - the ignition is switched off, the steering is not locked; 2 - Preheat and ignition (diesel models); 3 - Start the engine

The ignition switch and steering lock, also known as the ignition switch, located to the right of the steering column (Fig. 1.67).
The steering wheel is locked when you remove the ignition key fob. Before a new attempt to start the engine key must be turned to position 1 in order not to damage the starter by turning it off when the rotating crankshaft.
Keychain can be removed from the lock in positions 1 and 2 to move the key from position 3 to position 1, retighten it all the way into the ignition lock. When the engine stops, and a jump key moves to position 1.

ATTENTION
Do not remove the key from the ignition before the vehicle is stopped, because by blocking the steering wheel and maneuvering becomes unavailable.

On models with AT Keychain can be removed from the ignition switch only when the selector lever is in position "P". After removing the lock switch to AT blocked.

ATTENTION
N When the engine indoors there is a risk of poisoning.

Before starting the engine, put the gear lever in neutral (automatic transmission selector is set to position "P" or ?N?) and tighten the parking brake.
On a car with manual gearbox during engine start-up clutch pedal is depressed - the starter only has to rotate the crankshaft of the engine.
Once the engine starts, immediately release the ignition key - the starter should not rotate together with the engine.
After a cold start, he will be in a short time can be noisy, as yet not large enough oil pressure valve tappet clearances. This is normal and should not alarm you.
While the engine is not warmed up to normal operating temperature, avoid giving him a high speed and a full supply of fuel.
When towing vehicles with a catalytic converter for cleaning exhaust gas can not keep trying to start the engine when towing over a distance of 50 m. Nesgorev-neck, fuel may get into the catalytic converter and damage it.
Before attempting to start the engine by towing, you should try to put it with a battery of another vehicle.

Gasoline engines
These engines are equipped with fuel injection system, which automatically at any ambient temperature provides an optimal ratio between fuel and air.
Before starting the engine is warm or cold, and during start-up, do not press the accelerator pedal.
If you can not immediately start the engine, it should be in 10 to suspend the start and repeat it in half a minute.
If the engine does not start up again, check the fuse of the electric fuel pump.
After starting the engine is very hot should be a little push on the accelerator pedal.

Diesel engines
Preheating.
After switching position when driving ("Ignition ON") warning lamp depending on the engine coolant temperature signals or no signals about the need for preheating.
Start of the cold engine.
When the outside temperature is above +5 ? C:
- The engine can be started immediately without preheating. During start-up, do not press the accelerator pedal.
When the outside temperature is below +5 ? C:
- The key in the ignition switch, turn to position 2 - control lamp lights preheating. The lamp goes out after reaching a temperature sufficient to ignite the fuel;
When preheating is included, all other major consumers of power must be turned off - otherwise the battery will be overloaded with a large current.
- Immediately after turning off the warning lamp to start the engine.
If the engine does not start, once again turn preheating, and then try again to start the engine as described above. If at this time will not be able to start the engine, check the fuse preheating - perhaps he is blown.
Start the engine warmed up to operating temperature.
The control lamp of inclusion of preheating does not light up - the engine can immediately start.
Starting the engine after running out of fuel from the fuel tank.
If the fuel tank of a vehicle with a diesel engine was completely fully developed, the process of starting the engine after refueling may take longer than usual - it can take up to one minute. The reason is that the fuel supply system can be freed from the air contained in it only during engine start.

Anti-theft system
Electronic anti-theft system (integrated immobilizer) prevents the theft of the vehicle.
At the head of the key is placed an integrated circuit. With its help when inserting the key into the ignition lock is automatically turned off anti-theft system.
The inclusion of anti-theft system is carried out automatically when the ignition is switched off.

NOTE
Therefore, start the engine only using an agreed-encoded original key Volkswagen.

Stopping the engine
After a long high-load engine n it should not be off at once - it is necessary to give him for two minutes at idle to avoid extreme temperatures in different zones of the engine.

ATTENTION
After switching off the engine fan may still relatively long time (10 minutes) to rotate even when the ignition is off. The fan can also after some time suddenly start spinning again if:
- The temperature of the coolant rises due to the large temperature differences in different regions of the engine;
- Even when the engine is hot will increase the temperature in the engine compartment due to strong solar radiation.
Therefore, when working in the engine compartment, be especially careful.
