Overview

On cars Passat installed four-, five- and six-cylinder engines. On four engine cylinders are arranged in one plane, and the six-cylinder engine the cylinders are arranged in two planes at 90 ? to each other (V6). Engine cooling is performed with coolant. The engines are located in the engine compartment along the axis of the vehicle. The cylinder block is made of cast iron. The cylinder head is made of aluminum alloy and is bolted to the cylinder block. The cylinder head pressed steel guides and valve seats. To the bottom of the engine block is mounted sump into which flows the oil required for lubrication and cooling of the engine.
In gasoline engines, the cross-flow scheme is used in which the fuel-air mixture flows into the cylinder chamber on one side of the engine, and the exhaust gases are removed from the other side of the engine. With this arrangement significantly improves the filling of the engine cylinders fuel-air mixture and removal of the products of combustion. In diesel engines, to save space the intake manifold and the exhaust manifold on the same side of the cylinder head.
