Adjusting the differential

The differential to be adjusted if the replacement was carried out bearing rings, the gearbox or differential bearings. It should be a dial gauge, polished surface plate fitted to the side gear. To adjust, proceed as follows:

- Drive in the gearbox housing bearing outer race (the side crown wheel) with installed underneath washer 1.0 mm thick. The thickness of the washers must always be 1.0 mm, its designation - S1;

- Drive on the other side in the gearbox housing ring of the bearing without the puck. Bearing rings are made in a set, they can be used only in conjunction;

- Installed in the differential housing and to connect the two halves (both pan) using bolts. Pre knock the dowel pins. Tighten the bolts to 25 Nm;

- Set in the differential surface plate VW 385/17, as shown in Fig. 207; In its absence, you can also use the last fine sanding surface plate provided that it fits the size of the hole under the flange;

- Set the dial gauge so that the measuring pin had landed on the stove and set it on the pretension of 1.0 mm;

- Move the differential alternately in one direction and then the other side and follow the indications of the device (Fig. 208);

- The thickness of the other shims increased by 0.30 mm (pretension). If the result is moving, for example, 1.50 mm, the thickness of the second shims (her designation S2) can be calculated as follows.

The measured value is 1.50 mm

The value of the pretension of 0.30 mm

The thickness of shims S2 is defined as follows: 1.5 + 0.3 = 1.80 (mm);

- There are 21 types of different thickness shims, and shim thickness of 1.0 mm in thickness when the difference between the adjacent washers in size of 0.05 mm. Because of this you can always just pick the desired size;

- Again to remove the gearbox housing, press out the bearing ring without shims, install shims installed calculation S2 and press in the bearing ring.
