Overview

The system consists of engine start-up battery, the starter, the traction relay, ignition switch starter interlock (automatic transmission models only), interconnecting wiring and battery cables.
When you turn the ignition key in position ?START? (?Start?) through a retractor pulling the starter relay coil current flows. The anchor of the traction relay moves the lever (fork), which, in turn, introduces a pinion gear (made with overrunning clutch) into engagement with the flywheel (or torque converter automatic transmission). At the same time the movement of the anchor of the traction relay closes the contacts and the starter begins to scroll through the engine crankshaft.
To prevent damage to the starter caused by the high speed of the armature of a starter after the engine starts, the starter overrunning clutch takes the pinion gear out of engagement.
