Checking the regulated voltage (check the voltage regulator)
This test determines whether the generator voltage regulator controls the output voltage of the generator.
Preparing for inspection Verify that your car battery is fully charged. Check the tension of the alternator drive belt. Turn the ignition switch to ?OFF?. Disconnect the negative (-) terminals of the battery. Connect a digital voltmeter between the terminal ?S (L)? generator and "weight". First, connect the (+) lead of the voltmeter to the conclusion ?S (L)? generator, then (-) cable to a suitable "weight" (to the body) or negative (-) terminal of the battery. Disconnect the output wire from the terminal "B" of the generator.

Connect an ammeter (DC, with a range of 0-100 A) in series between the output of the "B" and the generator disconnected output wire. Connect the (-) lead of the ammeter to the disconnected output wire (Fig. 7.12). Connect the control tachometer according to the manufacturer's instructions. Attach the wire to the negative (-) terminal of the battery.
The verification procedure Turn on the ignition and check that the meter reads the specified voltage (battery voltage). If the voltmeter shows 0, then either there is a break between terminal ?S (L)? generator and the positive (+) terminal of the battery or fuse burned out. Turn off all lights and electrical accessories. Start the engine. Set the engine speed equal to 2500 min -1. Read the voltmeter when the alternator current is 10 A or less.
Analysis of the results If the voltmeter reads the standard value regulated voltage shown in the table, then the voltage regulator is defective. If the voltmeter does not correspond to the range of nominal values, or faulty voltage regulator, or generator. Once validated, gradually lower the revolution of the crankshaft of the engine to idle speed and then switch off the ignition. Disconnect the negative (-) terminals of the battery. Disconnect the ammeter, voltmeter and check the tachometer. Connect the output wire to the conclusion "B" of the generator. Attach the wire to the negative (-) terminal of the battery.
