Installing the crankshaft

To carry out this operation, set the cylinder block on a clean, horizontal working surface casing up. Remove the bearing cap bolts and carefully remove them from the crankcase. Arrange them in such a manner as to ensure correct assembly. Remove bearing shells with caps and the crankcase and wipe the surface with a clean cloth under the ear - they must be perfectly clean. Further assembly is carried out as follows:

Location main bearing shells
Fig. 2.29. Location main bearing shells: 1 - excavation in the bed of the bearing; 2 - a ledge on the loose leaf of the bearing; 3 - hole for oil

- Clean the surface of the new liners cloth and place them in beds of bearings. Provide a combination of adjusting protrusions inserts with indentations in their beds, and the combination of the holes for the passage of oil (see. Fig. 2.29);

A WARNING
In no case do not beat by hammering inserts and do not install them in place in some other way to power.

- Before final installation check the working air gap of the material with the help of ?Plastigage?, as described for the camshaft. Check the readings obtained with the data presented in the Table. 2.8;
- Once again wipe the bearing shells and crankshaft journals cloth. Make sure the oil hole and on the surfaces of the crankshaft is no dirt, dust, residual material ?Plastigage?, as this would be the dirt in bearings after the first engine start-up;

- Install thrust washers on both sides of the cover of the third bearing. Use a little grease to keep them in place; make sure they are properly installed in their intended recesses and grooves for the passage of oil are outside (Fig. 2.30);
- Lubricate bearing shells clean engine oil, then gently place the crankshaft bearing journals, taking care not to move the bearing shells, if necessary correct their position;
- Pre-lubricated surfaces, install main bearing caps in the correct order and with the correct orientation. Keep in mind that the first bearing cover should be closest to the camshaft drive belt. Mounting recesses in their beds and bearing caps must be adjacent to each other;
- Insert the fixing bolts of covers of bearings and tighten them first by hand, then - with the torque indicated in the table. 2.8. In the first place with the required torque tightened cap number 3, followed in order of distance from it - all subsequent. If provided for your type of engine, perform the tightness in multiple passes;
- Set housing cuffs crankshaft with new cuffs;
- After assembly, ensure that the crankshaft rotates freely, without jamming at certain points. It allowed only a small resistance. Also, test the axial play of the crankshaft, as described for the removal of the crankshaft.
