Adjusting the gap between the pinion and rack



Impaired clearance between the gear and the rack may cause a tight rotation of the steering wheel, noise and knocks steering. Work is carried out with the assistant. For the adjustment you need a special key Volkswagen.
The order of execution of works:
- Park the vehicle on a lift or over a pit;
- Disconnect the battery and remove it;
- Set the steering wheel to the position of the car in a straight line. Sharply turn the steering wheel in both directions 30 ?�. If the knock is heard, the steering requires adjustment of the gap between the gear and the rack;

- Turn the adjusting screw (Fig. 7.5 - the mechanism of TRW, Fig. 7.6 - gear ZF) with a special key to the Volkswagen until the knock disappears meshed gear-rack;

- Take a test drive. If the steering wheel is returned to the straight-ahead position, loosen the adjustment bolt.
