Thermostat

A WARNING
Replace the thermostat spend the engine is cold. In addition, during any work near the fan to prevent its arbitrary inclusion is necessary to disconnect the wire from the negative battery terminal.

Replacement
Check out the warnings given in Sec. 2.
Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery (if it is not done before).
To facilitate access to the thermostat housing, remove the ignition distributor.
Drain the coolant from the cooling system to a level corresponding to the lower edge of the thermostat. To do this, unscrew the radiator filler cap and the drain plug in the bottom. After draining, sufficient coolant drain plug screw.
Disconnect the upper radiator hose from the exhaust pipe thermostat housing.

Elements of cooling

Remove the temperature switch of the cooling fan (Fig. 5.1).
Remove the two nuts and remove the thermostat from the engine. Disconnect the solidified strip, complicating removal of the thermostat, you can use a rubber mallet.

Fasteners thermostat

Mark the position and remove the thermostat from the body (Fig. 5.2).
Before installing the thermostat clean the gasket surface residues from the exhaust pipe and the gasket face of the thermostat housing.
On both sides of the new gasket, apply a thin coat of sealant.
Set the thermostat in the housing and place the gasket so that the grooved surface points toward the thermostat. Replace the cover and fix bolts, having tightened their demanded moment.
On the exhaust pipe thermostat housing wear hose and clamp securely. Make sure that the arrow on the hose is aligned with the projection on the body.
Replace the radiator fan thermal switch.
Establish the ignition distributor.
Fill the cooling system antifreeze appropriate concentration.
Connect the cable to the negative terminal of the battery and start up the engine.
Run the engine at the removed filler cap as long as the upper radiator hose does not become hot (thermostat open).
While the engine is idling add coolant to the radiator to the bottom of the filler neck.
Install the filler cap.

Check thermostat
It is best to check the thermostat after its removal from the engine. Usually, if you suspect a faulty thermostat is most advisable to replace, since its cost is low.
To check, remove the thermostat.
In the presence of traces of severe corrosion and damage the thermostat must be replaced.
To verify that the thermostat hang it on a string in a glass vessel filled with water, and heat the water to a boil, and the thermostat should not touch the walls of the vessel. Monitor the temperature of the water with a thermometer. Thermostat should begin to open at a temperature of 88 ? C and at a temperature of 97 ? C to be opened completely. Otherwise, replace it.
Thermostat, which is not closed when the cooling water must also be replaced.
Set the thermostat.
