Replacing the brake pads

Removing and installing rear brake pads
Fig. 279. Removing and installing rear brake pads: 1 - Rear Axle; 2 - retaining spring; 3 - External brake shoes; 4 - Internal brake shoes; 5 - brake cylinder; 6 - wire wear indicator; 7 - the plug; 8 - a directing finger

Replace pads should, if pads are worn down to a thickness of less than 2 mm. You can check this by removing the wheel during a caliper, as described in Section. 12.3.1. When replacing should be guided by Fig. 279. In the mod. 412D set with two-piston calipers. Replacement of brake pads should be done in the following sequence:
- Unscrew the cork brake fluid reservoir;
- Repeatedly press the brake pedal to remove the system vacuum. Set behind the car on supports and remove the rear wheels;

Disconnecting wires wear
Fig. 280. Disconnecting wire wear

- Disconnect the wear indicator, as shown in Fig. 280;
- With a screwdriver and pliers to remove both the locking clip of the brake pad pin 4 (see. Fig. 279);
- A screwdriver to pry the ends of the springs 2 and remove it;

Unscrewing bolts brake caliper
Fig. 281. Unscrewing brake caliper bolts

- The back of the slide with a screwdriver to pry the two plugs of fixing bolts as shown in Figure 281 and unscrew bolts hex. After removing the bolts to remove the support cylinder. The cylinder is hung on a wire to the front axle, so it does not hang on the brake hose. Remove the block from the removal of the cylinder;
- Take out a second block of a support bracket;
- Thoroughly clean the receiving slots support and check for damage, dirt-protecting covers and the cylinder;

Retraction of the piston brake caliper pad before installing
Fig. 275. The retraction of the piston brake caliper pad before installing

- If pads are worn very much need to drown the piston in the brake cylinder, as shown in Fig. 275. To do this, you can also set the internal pad on the plunger and slowly push it in. At the same time make sure that the reservoir is not flowed brake fluid. If you want to pump out some liquid.
When installing the pads, proceed as follows:
- Clean the surface at the brake pads in the caliper;
- Bit pumped brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir as described above;
- Drown the piston inside the cylinder. For this purpose the clamp shown in Fig. 275;

Inner shoe
Fig. 276. The inner shoe

- Set with the spring block in the support cylinder, as shown in Fig. 276, and push in the direction of the arrows;

Outside shoe
Fig. 273. The outer strip

- To insert the external mounting block in place of the caliper bracket so that it took the position shown in Fig. 273;

Installing external pads on the bracket
Fig. 282. Installing external pads on the bracket

- Insert the second connector into the support arm. Thus its outer side arranged as shown in Fig. 282;

Tightening the brake caliper
Fig. 277. Tightening slide

- Carefully place the cylinder body on blocks and screw the mounting bolts through the pads in the caliper bracket. Wrap them hexagon, as shown in Fig. 277, point 25-28 Nm;
- After tightening the bolts to put on their caps;

Installing the holding spring
Fig. 283. Setting the holding spring

- Set the spring in the caliper bracket. Check the correct setting of the spring (Fig. 283);
- Wear a wire to spiral and attach to the contact support;
- Several times strongly press a brake pedal that came with the disc pads;
- If necessary to add brake fluid to the reservoir;
- Set the wheels, lower the car and tighten the wheel bolts to 160-180 Nm;
- After setting a few times to push the brake pedal until you install it the normal course. If this is not done at the first check when the vehicle brakes can fail. If the pedal "fails" to check the system for leaks. During the first visits after installing new brake pads are not too sharply. To brake a good run-in, followed by several times during soft brake pedal is depressed with a speed of 80 km / h to 40 km / h. After each braking is necessary to wait to the brakes are not overheated.
Recommendations for the use of brake pads
If the pads are too worn out, make sure that both pistons brake calipers move normally. Otherwise it is recommended to test the staples in the workshop. Pads should be replaced when their covers are worn to a thickness of 2.0 mm or less. You should also replace greasy or soiled with grease pads. Use only genuine need pads Mercedes-Benz and replace only complete. If the pads are worn down to the metal, it may have been damaged brake disc. This, of course, must be avoided under all circumstances.
Brake discs with traces of friction material pads should be cleaned thoroughly before installing new pads. New shoes should be earned extra. To this, gradually pressing the brake pedal to slow down several times with a speed of 80 km / h to 40 km / h. After each braking is necessary to pause to the brakes are not overheated. Before the running shoes is important to avoid emergency braking.
