Due to the energy released during combustion in the cylinder air-fuel mixture of the engine crank shaft of torque, while the frequency of rotation lies within a fairly narrow range. Most modern engines OHV-design of its maximum torque at approximately 2500 revolutions per minute. With increasing engine speed to 4500 rev / min value of its torque is reduced so that a further increase in power is no longer possible. Engine with overhead camshaft (OHC) are able to develop much more torque, but in a much narrower range of speeds.

The use of the transmission line component such as the gearbox allows you to adjust the relationship between engine speed and the rotation speed of the drive wheels of the car, providing a sufficiently high return efficiency of the power unit in almost any operating conditions of the vehicle.

The smooth transfer of torque from the crankshaft to the primary shaft of a manual gearbox (Manual) provides a clutch assembly, construction and operation of which is analyzed in Chapter transmission line of this manual. Sequential gear changes in the process of changing the vehicle speed is provided through the use of multi-gear transmission. The gear ratios of each of the five / six stages Manual transmission for maximum transmission efficiency of power developed by the engine driving wheels of the vehicle at various speeds.

Two of consideration in this manual all-wheel drive Mercedes-Benz models M-Class in addition to the automatic transmission (see chap. Automatically processed transmission) can be used manual gearbox (Manual) one of two types: 717.461 (ML 230) and 716.644 (ML 270 CDI) . Both boxes have a standard design used on most Mercedes cars with a classic rear-wheel drive (series 717.4 and 716.6).

Converted by the engine gearbox Manual transmission torque is removed from the rear end of the main shaft and is transmitted to the input shaft of the transfer case, to implement further its distribution between the front and rear driving axles of a vehicle. Detailed information on the structure and operation of the transfer case, refer to Chapter The transmission line of this manual.

Both gearboxes provided synchronization of all five (717.4) / six (716.6) switching stages all forward gears.

It makes sense to pay a little attention to the peculiarities of the functioning of a modern six-speed Manual transmission.

Boxes 716.6 Series are a class of fully synchronized 2-rotary shaft 6-speed transmission with one reverse gear, widely used both rear-wheel and four-wheel drive vehicles equipped with both gasoline and diesel engines.

2 - synchronizing ring gear 5/6
3 - Val
4 - Bearing shell backing

Design Manual transmission 7.6.6

1 - The input shaft
2 - The main shaft
3 - Intermediate shaft
4 - Front housing
5 - Rear housing
6 - Clutch release coupling device
7 - Mnogokonusny synchronizer switch 1/2
8 - Mnogokonusny synchronizer switch 3/4
9 - Gear 1st gear

10 - a gear wheel of 2nd transfer
11 - a gear wheel of 3rd transfer
12 - a gear wheel of 4th transfer
13 - The gear 5th gear
14 - a gear transmission 6 minutes
15 - reverse gear
16 - Central switching rod
17 - internal switching module
18 - an intermediate gear wheel transmission

Proper use 6th gear allows to achieve significant savings in fuel consumption by reducing the operating speed of the engine. Because of the design features a 6-speed gearbox have more weight than the 5-speed.

Box receives torque from the engine via a conventional dry-type clutch equipped with automatic wear compensator. Carter Manual transmission has a sealed structure and dressed not in need of replacement gear oil.

Accuracy and ease of having a short stroke switching is achieved by the following design features:

  • Application spindle-drive rope switch with fixed needle bearings in the central stem;
  • Using mnogokonusnyh synchronizers switching of 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th transfers;
  • Full synchronization of a reverse gear.

Gear assembly with shaft bearing is placed between the two planes. Used in the earlier 5-speed third bearing plane in the structure eliminated.

Two-piece split crankcase made of light alloy and sealed by a special liquid compound.

The input shaft (1) fixed in the flywheel by guide bearing and transmission housing - by means of a ball bearing with a recessed groove. Head (2) and the input (1) shafts are coupled with each other in a common plane transmission housing and secured by means of ball bearings with a recessed groove (ibid.).

The intermediate shaft (3) has a lightweight hollow structure and fixed to the roller clutch and ball bearings with a recessed groove.

Due to the minimum production tolerances polukarterov and gears, and by the use of the roller clutch, the need for adjusting the axial backlash shafts disappears.

Moving the gear lever are transmitted through the rod to the box. RKPP Removal may be effected separately from the engine, the need for removal arises when servicing the clutch, and in case of necessity of reducing the repair / replacement RKPP itself.

Given the complexity of the design Manual transmission, lack of free sale of necessary replaceable internal components and the need to use special equipment, composers of the present Management do not recommend to owners of cars to carry out overhaul of the gearbox on its own. Repair of boxes in the workshop car service is a fairly expensive operation, since then, should consider alternative options for replacing a failed block new or restored. Any useful information on the repair and replacement of transmission is available at service stations of Mercedes-Benz. Regardless of the chosen method of troubleshooting (repair or replacement), a separate box with the dismantling of the vehicle will greatly reduce material costs.

In this part of the chapter offers the reader descriptions of the processes of implementation, lying within qualification of the average mechanic-fan procedure, the total adjustment of the drive gear and the removal / installation Manual transmission assembly. Tips for switching control of Manual transmission set out in Chapter Controls and receptions of safe operation.

Information on automatic transmissions (AT) is presented in Chapter automatically processed mission.
