Lapping Valves

Lapping valve
Fig. 2.14. Lapping valve

Grinding the valves must be carried out using a special tool (on sale, there are several types of such an instrument). Also, for this you need a coarse and fine-grained grinding paste. Apply a small amount of fine paste to the valve face and attaching the grinding tool to the plate valve, rotary movements lapped valve head onto the seat (Fig. 2.14). Periodically lift the valve and turn it to redistribute the grinding paste. Swipe lapping of each valve for as long as the contact surface on the valve seat and would not appear as a continuous matt gray ring of constant width. If defects in the valves and seats are so great that it is not removed during lapping fine paste, use coarse grinding paste.

A WARNING
In the case of coarse lapping paste is necessary to check whether the permissible dimensional characteristics are met (if the valve stems will be performing too high from their guides, they will interfere with the proper operation of the hydraulic tappets). After grinding using coarse paste sure to remove its remains and perform fine-tuning the fine-grained surfaces.

Installation of valves and hydraulic tappets
Installation is performed as follows:

When installing the bottom plate of a spring of its convex side must face to the cylinder head
Fig. 2.15. When installing the bottom plate of a spring of its convex side must face to the cylinder head

- If by design (depending on the year of manufacture can be established or double valve springs, a single dish without bottom), replace the lower thrust plate springs, placing it as shown in Fig. 2.15;
- Insert the valve into directing plug in the cylinder head, brushing his rod with clean engine oil, and put the mounting sleeve that came with the new valve stem seals, at the end of the valve stem;
- Lubricate the valve stem seal installed in clean engine oil and gently sliding it onto the valve stem, push the rod to the valve sleeve. Then gently slide it into the guide sleeve - watch so that he stood straight out - and press-fit it with a special tool (3129) or a suitable diameter tube section or socket wrench of sufficient length;
- Install the valve spring in the cylinder head. If the design of the bottom plate is provided, make sure that the spring is correctly aligned with it. Replace the top plate on the spring, then a special device (see. Disassembly of cylinder head) compresses the spring until the moment when the upper plate is lower than the grooves for crumbs. Hold the spring compressed, tweezers establish crackers, then gradually release the spring compressor, making sure that the crumbs remained in their places. If crackers fell into place, the upper plate is impacting them and securely held in the grooves on the valve stem; Repeat this procedure for each valve at the end, hit the end of each valve through a piece of wood with a hammer. Again, make sure that the crumbs firmly seated in their places;
- Lubricate the surface with clean engine oil and hydraulic valve lifters in the same order (if the followers do not change), set them in place in the cylinder head. Drown them until contact with the valve, and then lubricate the upper part.
Installation of a camshaft
Grease necks and cams of a camshaft, as well as its supporting bearings in the cylinder head with clean engine oil and place the camshaft on his bed.

NOTE
When installing the camshaft manufacturer recommends using the new nut covers.

Proper positioning of labels on the engine camshaft ABF
Fig. 2.16. Proper positioning of labels on the engine camshaft ABF

- The engine ABF put both shaft drive chain (given its original position) so that the timing marks are aligned, as shown in Fig. 2.16. Lower camshafts and chain on the cylinder head, making sure that the marks were aligned;
- Install the camshaft so that the cams of the first cylinder looked up (excluding engines ABO, AEA, ABU and ABF), and then again with clean engine oil, lubricate the surface of the bearing journals of the camshaft and replace fixing the camshaft cover. Be careful - do not confuse them!

- On the engine inlet ABF first fixed shaft covers number 6 and 8. After you have tightened them with demanded effort, fix the exhaust camshaft caps number 2 and 4. Put on the end caps of the number 1 and 5 oil-resistant sealant and install the caps pairwise number 1 and 3, 5 and 7. The covers the camshafts are set so that the corners were cut from the intake manifold (Fig. 2.17).
- Lubricate the mating surfaces of covers 1 and 5 of the sealant;

- On engines ABU, AEA, and ABD number of each cover indicates the number of cylinders. The elongated protrusion must be on the intake side of the cylinder head (Fig. 2.18). Please set and tightening torque specified for the first broach the lid number 2 and 4. Next, install and tighten the lid ? 1,3,5. Before installation grease with a thin layer of sealant covers end parts number 1 and 5;

Fig. 2.19. Location camshaft bearing cap on the engines of AAM, ABS, 2E, ADZ, ADY (the axis of the hole is offset relative to the middle)

- On engines AAM, ABS, 2E, ADZ, ADY first set and tightening torque specified for the first broach the lid number 2 and 5, then - all the rest. The end surface lids number 1 and 5 treated with a sealant. Pay particular attention to the correct position asymmetric caps (Fig. 2.19).

Installing the camshaft seal
Replacing the seal of the camshaft can be done without removing the cylinder head, and involves the dismantling of the drive belt (s) accessory, the accessory drive pulley, the timing belt cover, the toothed belt camshaft and its tension device (if fitted equipment), sprocket camshaft and the rear cover. On engines ABU, AVD, AEA also necessary to drain the coolant and the removal of the water pump (the description of the process of dismantling these parts as well as the procedure for removal of the seal, see. Above).
To remove the seal of the camshaft without dismantling the camshaft:
- Drill collar installed two small holes at diametrically opposite points of each other. Screw holes in the two self-tapping screws, remove the cuff, pulling pliers for heads of screws;
- Clean the seat collar camshaft. Remove all remnants of the old cuffs, burrs, bullies;
- Put on the cuff on the shank of a camshaft, having greased the sealing edge of the cuff or the new camshaft with clean engine oil, then a hammer and a suitable diameter face head (or special arbor) press-fit cuff straight out into the slot. Keep in mind not to damage the pressing cuff, use the head, which will be based only on the hard outer part of the seal, rather than on the inner edge of the soft;
- Replace the toothed pulleys, the cover belt camshaft timing belt, the front cover of the camshaft drive belt, accessory drive belt;

A WARNING
Do not touch the camshaft and cylinder head.

- Replace the outlet coolant, replace the O-ring;
- Set the coolant temperature, oil pressure gauge; toothed pulley belt drive camshaft on the camshaft;
- If by design, install in the groove on the camshaft flat surface up the key, then set the toothed pulley on the camshaft so that the key into the notch in the pulley. If the key is not provided construction, align the tab on the pulley with the notch on the shank of the camshaft.
