Checking the steering and suspension



On the car standing on the earth, set the front wheels in the straight position and check the free running of the steering wheel. Increase freewheel may indicate worn wheel bearings, steering shaft joints, ball joints or steering mechanism.
Excessive vehicle rolls, increased vibrations of the body when driving on uneven road sway in the corners indicate possible damage to the steering and suspension.
To check the damper push each of the four corners of the car. If the body is not returned to its original position after one or two compressions, replace the shock absorber.
Check the position of the body relative to the ground. If there is a bias towards, forwards or backwards, then perhaps sunk spring or worn suspension parts.
On established on the lift wheel free check steering for leaks, the integrity of protective covers and seals. Check backlash wheel swinging in a vertical plane. A small play is permissible. With a large backlash need further verification and elimination. To establish the cause, swing the tire in the vertical plane, while pressing the brake pedal. There can not do without an assistant. If the brake pedal play is eliminated or significantly reduced, it is likely damaged wheel bearing; if the magnitude of the backlash varies slightly - worn suspension parts.
Shake the wheel in the horizontal plane. The presence of the backlash can be caused by wear in the wheel hub bearing ball joints or tie rod.
Using a large screwdriver as a lever, check the play in the joints between the parts of the suspension.
Check the condition of covers of constant velocity joints (CV joints) and their attachment clamps. Replace them if there are cracks or other damage.
Check the exhaust system. Check the exhaust system after the cooling of the engine. Check the pipes and connections for leaks, presence on them corrosion and damage, brackets and other details fastening systems, their tightness.
Check and correct the detected holes or damage to the underbody, through which the exhaust gases may enter the interior.
Make sure there is no contact of the exhaust pipe and the bottom of the car, otherwise replace the rubber ring suspension of the pipeline.
