Maintenance Transmission

K units, from which depend primarily on the reliability and durability of the transmission includes the transmission fluid cooler and a receiver filter fluid strainer prefilter disposed in the sump to the lower housing side. If necessary, draining the transmission housing, and access to the receiver liquid and the other components of the valve block pallet can be removed.
With a large car can run leakproof differential output seal, thus possibly lowering the oil level in the main transmission. If necessary seals can be replaced without removing the transmission.

Cooler
A cooler is a dual-chamber heat exchanger located in the upper part of the transmission case. In one chamber coolant circulates coolant from the engine, and on the other - a transmission fluid, which helps to maintain thermal equilibrium. If the temperature exceeds the temperature of the transmission fluid coolant, heat is transferred to the latter and the transmission fluid temperature is lowered. Periodic maintenance does not require a cooler. The exceptions are leaking coolant or damage to the cooler.

A cooler is mounted at the top of the transmission housing
Fig. 8.73. A cooler is mounted at the top of the transmission housing. Featured filter is not set in February 1991: 1 - filter; 2 - stud fastening of the filter; 3 - bolt with an internal channel; 4, 6 - washers; 5 - cooler; 7 - tube transmission fluid level indicator

If necessary, replace the cooler (Fig. 8.73), be sure to replace the O-ring gaskets.

Modification of filter
Transmission fluid filter installed on cars in 1990 and early 1991. issue, but in February 1991 the release of these parts has stopped. Replacement elements can be carried out in specialized centers ?Volkswagen? in the period until the next maintenance.
When removing the filter cloth wrap its foundation not to spill liquid on the crankcase. Unscrew the filter transmission fluid should be at the top of the edging of the chassis or tape remover to loosen the oil filter of the engine. Remove the filter, pre waited until the liquid is drained from the filter back into the cooler. Wipe with a clean cloth filter fit and tighten the bolt with a new O-ring.

Block valves and liquid receiver

The pallet receiver, valve block connector and gasket (view from the bottom of the crankcase

The pallet receiver fluid and the valve unit accommodated in the transmission case bottom (Fig. 8.74). Before installing the receiver liquid pre-install the gasket in the seat.
When installing the pallet track correctness of installation of the seal around the contour of the pallet. Before tightening the bolts, make sure the presence of spacer sleeves on all four corner holes.

Output seal the half-line
Half-axis output seal can be replaced without removing the transmission. To remove the flange required puller is VW 39, screwed to the flange bolts and removing the flange due to applied force.

A WARNING
When using a puller structure necessary to ensure that his landing, which would exclude damage to the internal thread of the drive shaft of the differential.

NOTE
To access the left flange of the axle shaft must be removed completely.

Replace seals spend a half-line in the following order:
remove the Allen key bolts and disconnect the internal hinge on the flange;

A WARNING
To avoid damaging the outer hinge, fix the detached part of the half-line of stiff wire hook;

remove the dust cover, and remove the snap ring, retaining flanges on the shaft. With Xpress puller flange shaft;

A WARNING
Not allowed unscrewing the bolt limiter screwed into the crankcase near the flange. Limiter (Fig. 8.75) is intended solely to provide a bearing preload.

remove the seal from the grooves using tool VW 681 or gently prying it with a screwdriver. Try it does not scratch the surface of the groove under the gland or adjacent surface;

The new differential output seal is installed with a special mandrel VW3158, or other device with a diameter equal to the outer diameter of the gland
Fig. 8.75. The new differential output seal is installed with a special mandrel VW3158, or other device with a diameter equal to the outer diameter of the gland. Bolt and stop (arrow) are designed to provide bearing preload. As part of this operation turning away and removal of the bolt is not provided

Fill the new multi-purpose grease the gland, and then press-fit the oil seal into place until fully seated (see. Fig. 8.75);
Check for wear on the mating surface of the flange with gland. When the development is too large, replace the flange;

Clamp the hose clamps for supplying coolant to the cooler to avoid its loss
Fig. 8.76. Clamp the hose clamps for supplying coolant to the cooler to prevent its loss. Clamps are special devices 3094

Install the flange in place using the tool with a bolt screwed into the drive shaft (Fig. 8.76);
wear on the shaft flange of the new snap ring from the end. Without much effort, set up a ring seated in the groove of the shaft;
Attach the hinge to the flange axis.
