Overview

Automatic transmission and the main transfer housed in a single casing, cast aluminum alloy. The whole unit is called the "transmission assembly to the main transmission and differential" or "mission." Automatic Transmission VW 096 has four speeds and reverse speed. Switching gears in the automatic transmission electronic. The benefits of automatic transmission is traditionally referred, above all, more rapid and timely gear changes. The transfer of torque from the transmission to the front drive wheels through the half-line and constant velocity joints (CV joints). Transmission assembly can be removed and installed on the vehicle without dismantling the engine. The variant of removing the box after the dismantling of the power unit assembly.

A WARNING
If you do not have sufficient experience or on the special equipment to perform some operations, repair of automatic transmission to provide the best professionals specialized service stations.

When disassembling the transmission mechanism need to be clean and to be attentive to every detail.
Before each operation, ensure you have the necessary tools to carry it out, especially when performing operations that require the use of metrology tools.
Automatic transmission and final drive units are reliable, and subject to the conditions of proper operation and maintenance of repair and, therefore, does not require disassembly.

Automatic transmission of type 096

Automatic Transmission (rear view) is shown in Fig. 8.63. Automatic transmission and the main transfer are located in different compartments within a single housing. The main gear, which is used to lubricate hypoid oil is completely isolated from the automatic mechanism. Automatic transmission is lubricated exclusively transmission fluid, the circulation of which is provided by a pump. When the engine stopped, pump fluid is not pumped.

Automatic transmission of type 096
In the automatic transmission type 096 four forward gears and electronic controls. The torque transmission from the engine is transmitted through the torque converter, which is a fluid coupling, provides enhanced torque, thereby achieving the best acceleration of the vehicle from the scene or when driving at low speed.

A WARNING
Towing the car "Volkswagen" with a faulty automatic transmission in an environment where the front wheels are in contact with the road, it can lead to the destruction of the transmission due to a possible lack of lubrication in it.

Another feature of the automatic transmission - the presence of board self-diagnostics have electronic control unit. The board provides the self-monitoring of the normal parameters of the transmission detects parameters beyond the specified limits and other faults and memorizes the fault detection and stores the information for later viewing. At specialized service stations for reading the information contained in the memory of the failure to use special electronic equipment.

Torque Converter
The torque converter is a hydraulic clutch. The motor rotates the curved vanes of the pump impeller disposed within the housing. Upon rotation of the blades creates a flow of transmission fluid, which transmits rotation of the turbine wheel coupled to a planetary gear transmission.
Increased torque provided by the central system of blades inside the converter - reactor. The reactor was installed on the overrunning clutch. Curved blade profile on reactor redirect fluid flow from the impeller into different sections of the turbine. At higher speeds, when the difference in rotational speeds of the pump and the turbine is small, the reactor can rotate freely and increased torque ceases.

Planetary gear
The transmission is based on the principles of fluid mechanics. Without aids converter can ensure a stronger torque required for all road conditions. Transfer of torque from the engine is provided by a planetary gear that transmits rotation at different gear ratios.

The gears of an automatic transmission

Transmission fluid under pressure, enables and disables several gidrostsepleny 10 (Fig. 8.64) and brake in the planetary gear, thus achieving a change of gear. The fluid pressure in the pump is maintained and the direction of fluid flow, acting on the various clutches and brakes, by means of the valve block.

Gear selector lever is performed, controlled by the driver. The lever is mechanically connected to the valve block 5 (Fig. 8.65) and operates the manual valve actuator. The valve manual actuator provides a direct gear changes. Furthermore, a gear change is made via an electronic unit.

The electronic control unit
The electronic unit controls the transmission based on traffic conditions and provides better maneuverability of the vehicle. The flow of transmission fluid and its pressure is regulated by seven solenoid valves. The electronic control unit mounted below the rear seat comprises a winding of solenoid valves, and selects the gear ratio shifts the switching point in response to input data such as vehicle speed and engine load.
The electronic control unit can operate according to two different programs, depending on the choice of the driver Sport mode or Economy. Sport mode transmission switching point is shifted so that the next switch, increased, transmission delay, thereby increasing torque, improved dynamic acceleration and maneuverability. Economy mode is programmed so that the next switch, elevated transfer occurs immediately, according to driving conditions, thereby increasing the efficiency.
In the absence of control of the electronic control unit switches the transmission mode controlled valve manual actuator located in the valve block mode (limp-home). You can turn on the 1st gear or reverse (position Revers). At any other position of the hydraulic Drive mechanism includes only 3rd gear.

A WARNING
The electronic control unit shall be subject to mandatory reprogramming when replacing or adjusting the throttle potentiometer throttle, throttle cable, as well as the replacement of the engine or transmission electronic control unit.

The main transfer
The main transfer consists of a PTO driven rotation of external gear teeth of the planetary gear, and the differential driven gear transmitting torque to the axle shaft. Differential rotates the front of the drive wheels at different speeds, which is necessary when you turn the car when the wheels cover different distances.
