The steering wheel and steering column

Move the steering wheel from side to side, and measure the clearance in the steering wheel with calipers.

Check backlash

Described test is treated as a mechanical steering and a steering: Take the steering wheel with both hands in opposite positions and move from side to side. If the clearance, measured as shown in the illustration, is more than 35 mm, the steering system to be adjusted. If the steering wheel moves up and down and from side to side, it means that the bearing in the steering column is broken or the steering shaft has too much play. The support of the steering column must be replaced in the workshop Nissan.

To check the steering adjustment, using a dynamometer (during a servo)

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Place the vehicle on a dry, flat surface, and cock a manual brake. Tire pressure should correspond to the desired value, in order not to have to overcome unnecessary friction.
  2. Start the engine.
  3. Warm hydraulic drive steering fluid up to operating temperature. This can be done repeatedly rotate the steering wheel from side to side.
  4. Hook the dynamometer for the steering wheel spokes as shown in the illustration below.
Check power steering.
  1. Pull the dynamometer and turn the steering wheel a full turn. Make sure that the indications do not exceed 4.5 kg.
  2. If the value is not correct, check the ball joints of steering drafts. If they are correct, it is necessary to remove the steering mechanism to adjust the damper. Since this requires the dismantling of the steering, this work must be done in a special workshop. In the worst case, the steering mechanism must be replaced.

Removing and installing steering column (including the steering wheel)

To remove the steering wheel need a special remover. The hub of the steering wheel has two threaded holes into which is screwed into the puller.

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Position the front of the vehicle to support and disconnect the battery.
  2. Gently press down the sound signal from the middle of the steering wheel, as shown in the illustration below. To do this, use a small screwdriver.
Removing the key sound (pad of the steering wheel).
  1. Mark the position of the steering wheel relative to the steering shaft (carefully use a center punch).
  2. Unscrew the nut of the steering wheel. At the same time hold the steering wheel. No steering lock latches to lock the steering shaft, as this may disrupt the locking pin.
  3. Unscrew the two halves of the lining of the steering wheel and disconnect the wires of the combined switches. The switch remains in the steering column.
  4. Remove the trim from the bottom and bend it.
  5. Loosen the clamping bolt of the universal joint between the steering column and the steering universal joint and knock him.
  6. Loosen the two bolts securing the top of the steering column on the instrument panel.
  7. Remove the two screws fastening the lower steering column.
  8. Remove the steering column of a vehicle, at the same time remove the lower end of the engagement with the universal joint. Installation is carried out in reverse order. First, install the universal joint on the steering shaft and tighten the bolt.
  9. Install the upper and lower fastening screws and tighten. Push the steering wheel shaft according to the marks and tighten the nut of the steering wheel with a force of 30 - 40 N ??? m while holding the steering wheel. After installing the steering wheel take a test drive and check that the steering wheel spokes is the correct way. Otherwise, again, remove the steering wheel and move one or two teeth.

Check the steering column

If there is a suspicion of the deformation of the steering column (for example, after an accident), it is possible to measure the steering shaft tube. To measure the size of this "A" (see. Graphic below). If this size is beyond the 556.2 - 557.8 mm, the steering column is deformed and must be replaced.

Measure the steering column between the arrows "a".

When folded and deformed top of the steering column support. In the normal case, threaded inserts are flush with the mounting collar. If they are offset, the column is deformed.
