Thermostat

The coolant pump

The thermostat controls the redistribution of coolant flow in the cooling system of the engine. The thermostat is disposed in the housing for the water pump cover, which has a sealing ring (see. Fig. 468).
The procedure for removing the thermostat (work carried out on the cold engine):
- Drain the coolant from the cooling system;
- Disconnect the feed hose;
- Remove the cover of the thermostat;
- Remove the thermostat with a sealing ring.

Note
For easy access to the thermostat lift the front of the car and establish it on support.

The thermostat can not be repaired, so in case of malfunction, replace it. A simple checking of the thermostat is carried out as follows:

Verifying thermostat
Fig. 192. Verifying thermostat

- Suspend the thermostat on the wire and place it in the container with cold water (see. Fig. 192);
- Hang a thermometer (temperature measurement with an interval of at least 10-120 ? C) so that it does not touch the bottom of the vessel;
- Heat the water.
Check out:
1) if the thermostat begins to open at a temperature of 85 ? C;
2) at a temperature of 105 ? C thermostat should be fully open;
3) The pin must move out of the thermostat housing at least 7 mm.
If the thermostat does not stand this test, then it must be replaced.
When installing the thermostat, use a new gasket. Check the hose clamp before you install it again on the hose. Fill in cooling liquid in cooling system, as described in Sec. 19.1.1.
