Check the cooling system

At the first sign of overheating if the temperature gauge went into the red zone (lit warning light engine overheating), but under the hood is not pulled out a couple of clubs, including the maximum heating mode the cabin, see. "Heating (air-conditioning), and blower". This is necessary to reduce the temperature of the coolant in the engine cooling system.
Turn on the alarm, depress the clutch pedal, and then, using the inertia of the car, try to gently move to the edge of the roadway and stop as much as possible right at the curb, and if possible, outside the roadway. Run the engine for a few minutes at normal engine speed to idle, enabled full capacity heater.

A WARNING
Do not stop the engine immediately! The only condition - the preservation of integrity of the cooling system. If the burst or come off the hose or formed another leak, except for liquid discharge from the surge tank cap, the engine must stop immediately.

After stopping the engine overheated begins local overheating the coolant at the point of contact with the most heat-stressed parts of the engine and the formation of vapor lock. This phenomenon is called heat stroke.
1. Stop the engine.
2. Open the hood and inspect the engine compartment. Determine where steam escapes. When viewed from the engine note the presence of coolant in the expansion tank, on the integrity of rubber hoses, radiator, thermostat.

A WARNING
Never open once a stopper of a broad tank. The liquid cooling system is under pressure, with the opening of traffic jams pressure plummet, the liquid boils and splashes it can scald you. If you want to open a stopper of a broad tank on the hot engine pre throw with top thick dense cloth, and only then gently rotate the plug.

3. Through a hole in the bulkhead in the engine compartment of the body is missing a hose connected to a tray mounted under the radiator heater. If the hose out of the hole follows antifreeze means the radiator is damaged.
If a leak is detected coolant hose burst can temporarily restore using tape.

HELPFUL ADVICE
Particularly well suited for this purpose reinforced (eg, silver), adhesive tape, which can be purchased in the automobile.

Leaking radiator or heater thermostat is difficult to eliminate in place, so in this situation you need to top up the cooling system with water and when driving to closely monitor the temperature gauge periodically restoring the level of the cooling system.

WARNINGS
Prolonged use of water instead of antifreeze leads to the formation of scale in the cooling system of the engine, a deterioration of its cooling and as a result, to reduce the resource.
Never do not add cold water to the overheated engine. It should open the hood to cool at least 30 minutes.

4. The engine may overheat in case of a failure of the thermostat, which regulates the flow of fluid into the cooling system through the radiator or past it (to accelerate warming of the cold engine). To check the thermostat is necessary to check the engine is warm to the touch temperature of the upper hose connecting the thermostat to the engine. If the upper radiator hose is cold, the thermostat is faulty, there is circulation through the radiator.
5. Very often the cause of engine overheating, the cooling system is equipped with an electric fan, a fan failure.

6. Start the engine, make sure the temperature and note whether to include overheating of the engine cooling fans. If they are not included, the cause may be a blown fuse, faulty relays, oxidised in a block of harness or burned motors. Replace the fuse-link 1 (pos. 4 Fig. 10.2) in the assembly block of safety locks and the relay, established in the engine compartment. If the fans after replacing the fuse has not started to operate, replace the relay 2, 3 and 4 in the same assembly block. If you replace the fuse and relay fans have not started to work, check out their motors, which take two additional wires and post them on the power directly from the battery. The wires should be secured and isolated.

A WARNING
Do not allow circuit of wires together! Pay attention to the polarity: the motor must rotate so that the fan pushes air through the radiator to the engine, and the directions of the incident and formed (Trip) airflows match.

If the motor is started to work, the wiring or the relay switching the cooling fan; if not - as faulty wiring or its own motor. The relay and the motor are not repairable, replace them (see. Sec. 10 "Electrical").

HELPFUL HINTS
The surge tank cap has two valves: inlet and outlet. Exhaust valve plays an important role in ensuring optimum temperature of the engine. It maintains the system overpressure less 0.13-0.15 MPa (1.3-1.5 kg / cm 2), providing a temperature increase start boiling and coolant vapor formation preventing intensive. Unfortunately, when jamming of the valve in the closed position when there is a significant excess of overheating overpressure - greater than 0.15 MPa (1.5 kgf / cm 2), which may lead to rupture of the expansion tank or breakdown of one of the hoses. In turn, the jamming of the valve in the open position causes premature boiling of the coolant.
Therefore, once a year wash the surge tank cap with running water. If in doubt, replace the plug. Obviously, if the engine is overheated to remove the cork expansion tank and in time it will coincide with the action of thermal shock, the boiling of the liquid and the formation of air pockets in the cooling system is guaranteed.
Once a year Clean the radiator cell with compressed air (for example, from a compressor), directing the stream first towards the oncoming airflow, followed by his direction to remove dirt from the surface of the heatsink, adhere to insects and road debris. So it is possible to partially restore the efficiency of the radiator.
