Matic (all-wheel drive version) (only on certain models with petrol engine)
All-wheel drive version was and the previous generation E-Class. For the new model from Mercedes engineers were able to present a modern development, which has been offered in conjunction with the emerging in March 1997 V6 engine and five-speed automatic transmission with electronic control. The main goal of the development was to simplify the structure.

Four-wheel drive in the new version of 4Matic permanent connection is via a single-stage transfer case 2 (Fig. 6.24) can only be mechanically with constant torque distribution in a ratio of 65% - to the rear axle and 35% - on the front. Alignment function of torque between axles performs center differential with double planetary gear. Front-wheel drive gear is carried out with a cylindrical gear-protection and enhanced performance, which also works as the oil pump and lubrication system provides the transfer case. The function performs electronic differential lock traction control system ETS, which controls the amount of torque to individual wheels and reducing its braking while improving traction on the other wheel. Added to this is proven in other models of Mercedes Electronic Stability stability ESP, 4Matic models that controls all four wheels when sensors detect a critical situation traction - for example, in corners or when overtaking on slippery surfaces. Moreover, in this complex system of control and the so-called integrated system Brake-Assist (BAS), which in 1997 is fitted as standard in all model lines car Mercedes. Here we are talking about management in emergency braking situations. The sharp deceleration in the critical case is evaluated by an electronic device for speed pedal. From this moment control with ensuring the most effective braking electronics assumes as long as the driver does not start to control the pedal force (see. Also "Brakes"). Troubleshooting system ETS, ESP and BAS in any case are the lot of specialists. Even in a normal replacement of oil in the transfer case and front axle differential is no longer necessary. Both units use hydraulic fluid with lifelong durability.
