Automatic transmission (automatic transmission)

Even with full synchronization transmission and switching easy handling manual gearbox it is still a challenge for many drivers. Therefore, a Mercedes also used the machine, removing the driver from the task of shifting gears - automatic transmission (automatic transmission). It allows selection of desired transmission depending on traffic conditions takes place automatically, usually four forward gears. The fourth generation of the automatic transmission, which produces Mercedes-Benz company since the beginning of 1995, are the norm five major programs. CDI models E-Class series are equipped with a five-speed automatic transmission with newly developed elec-tronic control.

The compact five-speed automatic transmission in the context of

For the five forward gears in the automatic transmission of the new generation are used in all three planetary gear mechanism 3 (Fig. 6.9) and the six elements of two multi-plate clutch to transfer torque without breaking the flow of power. Until now, for the same number of transmissions required four planetary gear and the clutch seven elements.
Instead use for these purposes multi-plate clutch (clutch) and the band brake engineers from Mercedes used in the automatic transmission of new generation multi-disc clutches and multi-disc brakes. The advantage is that during the lifetime of the machine their quality remains optimal. Reducing the number of planetary gears allowed the AKP to make more compact: no five-speed automatic transmission in this class other manufacturers or four-stage can not even come close to the AKP Mercedes and this parameter. Its length is only 600 mm, 150 mm shorter than other comparable automatic transmission. About the same size and has a four-stage automatic transmission Mercedes, but there is at least one gear and no torque converter with lock-up clutch. It features a new automatic transmission and weight. Its weight of 80 kg, almost a third less counterparts. To achieve such a result has allowed the use in the manufacture of automatic transmission from Mercedes body sheet metal to replace the heavy cast and forged designs.

With its modern design the new automatic transmission consists of only 630 items (Figure 6.10). It is 45% less than comparable five-step models.
