Catalytic converter block comprises a carrier 3 (Fig. 5.55), with a coating of the active catalytic material. The structure of this substance are salts of noble metals on the surface of which chemical transformations. The catalytic converter is fixed to the housing 1 via the circuit 2. Since the airbag cushion itself is a good insulator, there is the need for additional insulation.
Immediately upstream of the catalytic converter is an oxygen concentration sensor. It shows the residual oxygen content in the exhaust gases and sends a corresponding signal to the engine control unit, that in turn controls and changes the air-fuel ratio (rich or poor). Optimal post-combustion occurs in the catalytic converter when the exhaust gas contains a sufficient amount of fuel. Temperature afterburning - 300-800 ?� C, the fuel mixture must contain a large amount of fuel.
By controlling the excess air ratio in the catalyst oxidizes carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (CH), and reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx).
To ensure the required service life of the catalytic converter must meet the requirements listed below.
Safety precautions when working with a catalytic converter
Fill the fuel tank only with unleaded petrol.
When filling or topping up the engine oil to the engine is required to make sure that the oil level does not rise above the maximum mark.
Do not start operating temperature of the engine towing vehicle. Hitting a catalyst unburned fuel may result in its destruction.
If you have difficulty with starting the engine does not keep for a long time included a starter, because the fuel at the same time injected into the cylinder and into the exhaust system. Locate and repair.
Do not allow complete consumption of fuel in the tank.

PRACTICAL ADVICE
Repair the exhaust system
Rust can be repaired by welding, but only for a short time. Special plaster or bandage kept longer, but in this case the corrosion appears again near the repair site. The exhaust systems with more than one number mufflers often after replacing one of the second silencing fails. Therefore, usually, service centers change the entire system. Yet, before you start to work with the exhaust system, examine it and decide if you need to replace individual parts or the entire system.

SEQUENCE OF WORK
1. Lift the car and fix on supports stable.
2. Remove the rusted screw connections, for the assembly use new fasteners, washers and gaskets.
3. Replace all rubber parts with new suspension system.
4. If you had already replaced details of the system to share best butt joints of pipes in a heated state. Service centers for the use of gas burners, a good household gas burner is also suitable for this purpose. Protect your hands with gloves, eye - glasses, prepare a fire extinguisher. Before using the burner, try rust.
