The propeller shaft

Leaks in the front propshaft

There is a defect in the gland or transmission transfer case. Description replacement procedures, see chap. Automatic transmission. During the replacement check equipped with slots holder crosses for scoring, burrs and rough edges can damage the gland. The barbs can be removed with fine grinding stone or emery paper.

At the start of the load transfer a transmission line (directly after the installation of the transmission / transfer of checkpoint) having a knock or click

  1. Disconnected components of the rear suspension or weakening their attachment. Check the nuts and bolts of the supports and tighten them with demanded effort (Chapter Suspension and steering). Check the condition of mounting bushings (Head Suspension and steering).
  2. Bolts of the propeller shaft. Check all bolts and nuts and tighten them with demanded effort.
  3. Worn or damaged bearing crosses universal joints. Check the condition of frogs (Chapter Clutch and transmission line).

When the vehicle is moving constantly holds metallic clang

There is the aforementioned wear crosses bearing universal joints (Chapter Clutch and transmission line).

Vibrations

Before coming to a final conclusion about the uselessness of the PTO shaft make sure that the wheels are properly balanced, then make a test described below.

  1. Set in the interior tachometer for fixing the engine speed during driving. During the test drive, follow the engine rpm tachometer and secure evidence at the time to maximize the intensity of the vibration. Then switch the transmission into another gear and bring the engine speed to the same value.
  2. If the vibration reaches its peak value at the same engine speed, the cause of its occurrence is not a defect of the propeller shaft, because its rotational speed is excellent.
  3. If the vibration persists, or its intensity decreases significantly with changes in transmission, but at the same engine speed, proceed to the analysis of the possible existence of other reasons.
  4. The propeller shaft may be bent or deformed. Check the condition of the shaft, in case of need make its replacement (Chapter Clutch and transmission line).
  5. On the clumps of dirt stuck to the shaft or car undercoating. Clean the shaft and repeat the test.
  6. Worn bearings frogs universal joints. Remove and inspect (Section Clutch and transmission line).
  7. Balancing broken propeller shaft and / or flange. Check the shaft weights balances. Remove the propeller shaft (Chapter Clutch and transmission line), and set him in his place, having turned 180 ?. If the situation is not corrected, make a professional balancing shaft.
