The principle of the automatic transmission

The planetary gear automatic transmission
Fig. 6.11. The planetary gear automatic transmission 1 - driven element; 2 - locked member

The basis of the so-called automatic transmission is a planetary gear. It consists of a gear (sun gear), around which the other three gears (satellites). The design closes the external gear with internal teeth (ring gear). Unique way of connecting gears. The planetary gear mechanism is in constant engagement. Stepped transfer occurs without interrupting the flow of torque thanks to the inclusion of lock and freewheel satellites, solar and ring gear (Fig. 6.11).
Shifting is thus done without breaking the flow of power. Lock and launch carried out multi-disc brakes and hydraulic clutch. In a multi-stage automatic transmission installed in a number of three planetary gear. That's the way the automatic transmission with three forward and one reverse gear.
