Torque Converter

Available after removing the center console elements (PTC)
Fig. 6.12. Available after removing the center console elements (PTC): 1- backlight shift gate; 2 - a cover; 3 - lock parking mode; 4 - switching mechanism

In the automatic transmission between a number of planetary gears and the motor is torque converter (hydrodynamic torque converter), which serves to transmit torque through circulating in the cavities of its working fluid ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid). The torque converter consists of a pump, the turbine and the reactor. These are enclosed within a common housing in such a way that they form a closed cycle oil. The motor rotates the impeller, which transforms mechanical power into hydraulic. The turbine is connected to the primary shaft of the automatic transmission, it transforms this energy into torque. The reactor is located between the pump and the turbine, which always have a certain difference in the engine speed. When starting the vehicle and it is maximal decreases with increasing speed. Thus, to a certain extent always present slipping mode.

Technical Dictionary
The provisions of the selector lever.
"P" (park). In this position, the automatic transmission input shaft blocked. Lock provided with special gear cam. In this mode, gears do not rotate and remain locked. When parking the car the selector lever should be transferred to the position ?P? only when the vehicle is stopped.
?R? (reverse gear). To enable this transmission car should be, and the engine - idling. If during the forward motion lever is accidentally moved into position ?R?, a special safety valve is responsive to the movement of blocks include a reverse gear.
?N? (neutral gear). In this position the selector lever connection between the gear and the engine resulting released. But in contrast to Mode ?P? gear is not locked, since all nodes clutch are off, and no gear is not retained.
?D? (movement). In this position, the front gear in the clutch begins to actuate the hydraulic pressure so that the torque from the engine is transmitted to the drive gear. The car starts at the same time to move forward. It can be stopped by pressing on the brake light. When you press the accelerator pedal acts normal movement with all gears.
"2" (2nd gear). This mode is designed to overcome slopes and lifts, or driving on snow and ice. When you press the accelerator pedal remains on 2nd gear. When the pedal is braked engine.
"1" (1st gear). This mode is used only for the steep climbs and slopes. When you press the accelerator pedal remains on 1st gear. When the pedal is a strong engine braking.
Lock the gear lever. To translate the lever in the mode ?R? and "2" (except for the transfer from the "1" to "2"), as well as on and off mode ?P? must press the side of the selector lever. The motor can be started up only in the "P" or "N". When you activate the ?R?, ?D?, ?1" or "2" safety device to prevent the automatic transmission car from starting (Fig. 6.12).
Two reverse gears. Switch on the center console, the driver can activate a special winter mode. It differs significantly from the standard mode ?S?. (For example, if necessary, start on snow or ice is carried out on the 2nd gear). For a smooth ride in reverse turns 2nd reverse gear with an increased ratio. Gear changes take place in the winter mode (?W?) at lower engine speeds. The main reaction conditions for the automatic transmission of motion (its switching), for example when driving uphill stored. In contrast, from the program of the dynamic reaction of the AKP to the "full throttle? (?Kick-fast?) or a sudden release of the accelerator pedal (?Fast-off?) electronic automatic transmission mode ?W? blocks.

PRACTICAL ADVICE
Caution Towing
If your Mercedes does not start, it does not push or pull to help start up the engine. The torque converter can not provide the engine off feedback from them. Therefore, you should first try to start the engine using jump leads.
The car can be towed only forward, setting the automatic transmission selector lever in position ?N?. During towing automatic transmission oil pump does not rotate, while the planetary drive mechanism to rotate the propeller shaft. Therefore, the vehicle can only be towed at a distance of not more than 50 km and with a speed not exceeding 50 km / h.
