Removing and installing exhaust system

The service life of the exhaust system as a whole depends on the operating conditions of the vehicle. With frequent short trips condensate precipitation and corrosive substances within the system increases significantly, which may lead to rust from the inside. Long trips when the engine operating temperature and favorable conditions for the combustion of fuel-air mixture reduces the corrosiveness of the exhaust gas components. Also deposited on the inner walls of the solid particles are burned at high operating temperatures. External corrosion occurs by water and salts. Loose connections motor causes it to high vibrations, which are transmitted on the fixed connections both exhaust pipe and further to the entire system.
Therefore, from time to time to prevent possible serious faults necessary to carry out inspection of the exhaust system as follows:
- Check screw connections and fastening the exhaust manifold, but when detecting weak bindings do not tighten them too much;
- Check the rubber feet on the occurrence of possible gaps, cracks and other damage, in case of replacement;
- With the engine running, close the exhaust pipe with a cloth. If the engine stops, it means that the exhaust system is airtight. On the contrary, the hissing sound will indicate the place of a possible unsealing;
- If the exhaust sound is muffled - will soon be necessary to replace the muffler.
The catalytic converter is installed in front of the exhaust system. Inside, it usually has a fine-meshed structure of metal or ceramic, through which the exhaust gas. Cells coated with platinum or other similar metal which will react and neutralize harmful substances. The converter installed lambda probe which determines the content of carbon monoxide in the exhaust gas and transmits this information to the controller of the injection of fuel. Electronics is responsive to the changing composition of the mixture.
Removal and installation is not too difficult. Pay attention to the following points:
- Disconnect the exhaust manifold bracket as described above;
- Clipped screen thermal protection;
- Poorly-looking rubber suspension should be replaced.
Laying between the double pipe exhaust manifold and catalytic converter always be replaced when removed.
When screwing the pipe system connections must be tightly fit them together. Do not over-tighten fixing nuts.
On the engine 2.9 liters to the exhaust system also includes a turbocharger, charge-air intercooler and exhaust gas recirculation (AGR). These elements are described hereinafter.
