Withdrawal

If the shock absorber base must be removed without disassembling the control arm, it is necessary to adhere to the following instructions to the moment when the spring strut can be removed at the top of the knuckle (wheel bearing housing).

Attention
Before removing the shock absorber acquainted with Sec. "Drive shafts". You must know that the nut of the drive shaft can not be turned away if the car is on wheels.

All the self-locking nuts must be replaced after loosening. Their hallmark is a plastic insert in the threaded nut.
To remove the shock absorber must do the following:
- Loosen the wheel bolts and axle nut on the car standing on the earth;
- To establish reliable support and remove the wheel. If necessary, disassemble the steering knuckle to turn away 12-sided axle nut with the appropriate face head;
- Unscrew the clamp wheel disk brake and secure it with wire in the right place, without disconnecting the bracket from the hose. Staples can not in any case leave hanging on the brake hose;
- Unscrew the caulking nut hinge tie rod bolt and remove the ball joint with special tool, as shown in Fig. 237;

- Unscrew the bolts of the drive shaft flange on the inside. Be sure to use of the appropriate face head, because otherwise you can damage the screw heads;
- Disconnect the wheel speed sensor anti-lock system (ABS). To protect the wheel speed sensor from damage it is best to remove it from the knuckle;
- Remove the inner side of the lower control arm bolt mounted on the front side of the support. This bolt is screwed into a threaded hole on the inner side of the transverse suspension beam;
- Unscrew the back of the control arm is inserted from the bottom bolt. It is located on the screw in the back of the cap nut;
- The bottom of the control arm to remove the nut rod stabilizer bar. To do this, unscrew the nut, remove the plate from sheet metal and rubber mount. Remember how the two parts have been installed. Pull up the connecting rod from the compound;

- Mount the shock absorber can be seen in the engine compartment. It is necessary to unscrew the nut, which is in the middle of the hood strut. However, because the piston rod can thus also be rotated, it must be fixed. The Volkswagen service centers for this purpose used a special key 3186 (Fig. 258), but in order to unscrew the nut, you can use a socket wrench with hexagon socket and ring spanner. Suspension strut thus released and may fall down;
- Fold down the shock absorber base and remove the wishbone from the sub-frame;
- Remove the plate from the top side.
