Checking the engine oil

Check the oil level after every second refueling with gasoline. On an old engine with increased oil consumption makes sense to check the oil level each time you fill up a full tank.

SEQUENCE OF WORK
"Daily maintenance"
1. Before starting the engine check the oil level on a cold engine.
2. Place the vehicle on level ground.
3. Wait 5 minutes to allow all the oil in the crankcase glass.
4. Pull the dipstick. Wipe the dipstick with a clean cloth. All the way to slide the probe into the socket, wait for a while, and taking it again check the oil level.

The marks on the dipstick

5. If the oil level is between the markings on the dipstick - all right. The oil should be topped up only if the level is close to the level of "minimum". The zone between the markings "minimum" and "maximum" amount corresponds to 2 liters (Fig. 4.34).
6. For topping up the oil with a clean funnel.
7. Top up until the oil level is below the "maximum" (top marking).
System ASSYST - control of oil while driving
Since March 1997, Mercedes cars set a new system ASSYST service control oil when moving. The system is based on years of research service life of engine oils. Oil from vehicles, which travel through the city and only a short distance, "produced" within 5000 km. While on vehicles used mostly for travel over long distances and on the highway at speeds from 80 to 150 km / h, oil change intervals are close to 30,000 km. These various operating conditions of the engines takes into account the system ASSYST. The microcomputer on the basis of information received from the various sensors, records the actual state of the engine oil and engine care plan. One of the indicators of the "aging" of oil, for example, records the content of the iron particles, which increases sharply after 5000 km at short distances.
To be able to identify the factors affecting the level and oil consumption, Mercedes-Benz has developed a special sensor. It is heated under elevated or reduced levels of oil and, moreover, determines the time when it is necessary to change the oil. In addition, the sensor detects changes in the structure of oil, such as additives in metal therein, fuel or coolant, and warns the driver. Press the corresponding button when the ignition is switched on the display shows the status and level of oil.
