Starter Service

Checking on the vehicle

When refusing the starter while the engine is started, follow these verification.

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Check the condition and charge level of the battery.
  2. Strip the battery terminals, paying special attention to cleanliness and its positive terminal clamp.
  3. Check the condition and mounting terminal.
  4. Turn on the headlights and ignition. If lights are lit, but the starter does not work, it can be regarded as a sign of the presence in the starting circuit short circuit. Check whether the motor is jammed or assembly of the starter gear flywheel (in these cases, the symptoms are the same).
  5. If the lights are off and the starter does not work, check the ignition wiring for continuity.
  6. Inspect the exterior wiring for signs of breakage. If the defects could not be found, remove the starter to perform detailed diagnostics.

  15. If necessary, by using a pair of screwdrivers extract clutch bearings. Note the position of the larger ones.
  16. If necessary, remove the bearing anchor, using for this purpose a stripper.
  17. Thoroughly clean all components. In no case do not immerse the body, anchor or clutch in the solvent.

Checking the Status

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Using an ohmmeter, check for the presence of the brush holder insulator conductivity. Connect one lead of the unit to the positive side of the brush holder, the second - to the negative. If conductivity takes place, make the necessary repairs or replace the brush holder.
  2. Measure the length of the brush, compare the measurement result with the requirements of table sizes and adjustments. If necessary, replace the brush. Brushes should slide freely in the holders - check.
  3. Check the efforts developed by brush springs, compare the results with regulatory requirements (see. Table sizes and adjustments in the end of this manual). If necessary, replace the spring.
  4. Check the commutator for cavities and burnouts. Wipe it with a cloth soaked in gasoline and polish fine sandpaper. In case of heavy wear sewer can be clamped in the lathe chuck and slightly pierced a very sharp cutter at high speed rotation. After completion of the bore, measure the outside diameter of the collector and compare it with the regulatory requirements (see. Table sizes and adjustments in the end of this manual). Trim the isolation between the segments to the desired depth.
  5. Connect one lead of an ohmmeter to the shaft or armature core and move the second forming surface of the collector. If any of the points will occur conductivity anchor is faulty and should be replaced.
  6. Check for the presence of pole winding conduction between the wire winding and each of the brushes. If conductivity takes place, the wire windings of the pole broke.
  7. Connect one lead of an ohmmeter to the wire windings of the pole, and the second - the body. If the conductivity occurs should be replaced by polar winding body.
  8. Check the drive gear teeth for signs of wear or damage.
  9. Make sure that the clutch transmits rotation only in one direction. In the opposite direction of the sleeve must be turned easily and smoothly, and the entire assembly must be free to move along the screw slots.

Assembly

L models 3.0

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Coat the planetary gears, gear wheel with internal gearing and lever the high-temperature grease.
  2. Put the planetary assembly, the shims and the front cover on the intermediate shaft driving gear.
  3. Put on the gear shaft washer and retaining ring.
  4. Put on the drive shaft gear, stubborn and retaining ring.
  5. Set the drive lever and the drive gear in the cover on the drive side.
  6. Install the tension spring of the lever, and if removed, the adjustment plate in the electromagnetic traction relay. Carefully place the cover on the drive side traction relay. Track correctness of its position relative to the actuator arm. Screw the fixing bolts of the traction relay and tighten them with demanded effort.
  7. Set to anchor the intermediate rear cover and shims (following the previous procedure).
  8. Secure the brush in its holder and set the anchor assembly of the brush holder, the housing and cover from the reservoir.
  9. Install the brush holder assembly to the housing and an anchor on the cover of the drive side (taking into account the risks of landing). Screw through-bolts and tighten them securely.
  10. Install boot and screw the fastening screws into the cap from the reservoir. Firmly tighten the screws.
  11. Hand pull the gear out of the housing so that it is pressed against the stop and measure the distance from the end of the pinion to the surface of the housing.
  12. Apply a voltage of 12 V between the bayonet terminal traction relay and terminal pole winding traction relay. Repeat the measurement of the preceding paragraph. Subtract the result from the second to the first determination of the axial backlash gears, compare the calculation result with the regulatory requirements (see. Table sizes and adjustments in the end of this manual).
  13. If necessary, add the adjustment plate between the reference surface of the magnetic switch and the cover on the drive side or remove the excess.
  14. Attach the wire to the terminal pole winding traction relay and firmly secure it with a nut.
  15. Install the starter on a car.

Models 4.2 l

Installation is the reverse order of removal.

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. If removed, install new bearings in the clutch assembly and an anchor. Lubricate the bearings with high temperature grease anchor. Sealed bearing type clutch grease packed at the factory and do not require additional lubrication.
  2. Grease a high temperature grease the teeth of the gear, helical gear drive slots, the plunger of the traction relay and lever.
  3. Set the gear in the clutch, set the pinion spring and sleeve.
  4. Press the sleeve down and set on end gear snap ring. Make sure all of the bushing on the locking ring.
  5. Install the pinion assembly in the clutch cover on the drive side.

  7. In the same manner assemble the lever, the spring and the traction relay.
  8. Install the assembly of the traction relay and the rubber seal on the cover of the drive side. Replace and tighten the bolts of the traction relay.
  9. Hand until it stops, remove the gear of the cover and measure the amount of its protrusion.
  11. If necessary, add the adjustment plate between the reference surface of the magnetic switch and the cover on the drive side or remove the excess.
  12. Set anchor in the body.
  13. Install the brush holder in the housing assembly. Insert the brush holders and put them spring.
  14. Replace the body O-ring. Make sure that it is not twisted.
  15. Install the body assembly from the armature and brush holder on the cover of the drive side. Achieve combination of number of ticks.
  16. Install the housing end cap. Screw fixing bolts and tighten them securely.
