Replacing the brake pads

Details caliper is VW MK.I
Fig. 289. Details of the caliper is VW MK.I: 1 - wheel bolt, 110 Nm; 2 - Disc; 3 - bolt 10 Nm; 4 - Reflector; 5 - wheel bearing housing; 6 - a spring of fixing brake pads; 7 - the brake pads; 8 - the support cylinder; 9 - the lower guide pin; 10 - the bottom sleeve; 11 - Spacing sleeve; 12 - the bottom bolt, 25 Nm; 13 - a bolt; 15 Nm 14 - baffle; 15 - the top bolt; 25 Nm; 16 - upper spacer; 17 - upper bushing; 18 - upper guide pin

To use the caliper mounting bolts with hexagonal head with separate guide fingers. Fig. 289 shows the details of a support such as VW MK.I for vehicles with non-ventilated brake discs.
Replace the brake pads must be in the following order:
- Set in the front of the vehicle support;

Bolts

- Unscrew the two screws indicated in Fig. 290 and lift the caliper. At the same time take up the lower part of the slide and rotate it in the arrow in Fig. 291 direction;

Turn up the slide to remove the brake pads

- Carefully push the piston rod into the threaded hole of hard wood. Thus from the master cylinder reservoir may leak brake fluid should therefore be pumped out of the tank a certain amount of brake fluid;
- To measure the thickness of the brake linings. If they, along with a metal base are worn down to 7 mm in thickness, they must be replaced in the kit;
- Open the caliper bracket and the cylinder clean of brake dust. At the same time ensure that no fluid leakage that indicates a cylinder. In this case it is necessary to repair the support cylinder (Sect. 14.2.2) or install a new one.
When installing the brake pads, proceed as follows:
- Set the brake shoe linings with large surfaces on the outside;

- Install both indicated in Fig. 293 spring lock brake pads in the caliper holder. New springs set, if you replace the brake pads. They should be in the position shown in Fig. 292;
- Carefully place the support cylinder holder to the position where it will be possible to screw the two mounting bolts. When pressed against a stronger cylinder to the caliper holder retaining spring may be deformed. The cylinder should be set as shown in Fig. 291, first top portion and then lower;
- Tighten the two screws alternately to 25 Nm;
- Further assembly should be carried out in reverse order. If necessary, adjust the fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir. Then repeatedly press the brake pedal to the brake pads pressed against the disc. Tighten the wheel torque of 110 Nm.
