Coolant level indicator

When the ignition is switched off and the engine warning lamp on the instrument panel lights up weakly (control lamp). If the coolant level is normal, when you start the engine light goes out. If the lamp continues to burn brightly - not enough coolant.

Expansion tank
Fig. 4.43. Expansion tank: 1 - retaining ring; 2 - a lining; 3 - sensor; 4 - float lever

The control system is powered by a floating sensor installed in the expansion tank (Fig. 4.43). If coolant is not enough, the contact closes.
The cause of malfunction can be burned out lamp breakage sensor or open circuit.
If you turn on the ignition control lamp does not light up, it might be burned out.
If the lamp does not turn off when you start the engine, but the coolant level is normal, it means that the sensor is faulty. This can be checked by disconnecting the contacts of the sensor. If the light goes out - the sensor is faulty. Remove the sensor, check float and other elements. Replace the sensor.

PRACTICAL ADVICE
Loss of Coolant
If during movement takes a large amount of coolant required to make up for her loss, in the extreme case, use water for this purpose.
When a large difference in temperature (cold water - hot engine) can warp the cylinder head. In the preparation of so-called "cold shock" the motor unit can provide a microcrack. Therefore, prior to the Gulf of liquid let the engine cool down as soon as possible and determine the cause of coolant loss.
