Engine 290 TD (OM 602) is the first diesel engine with direct injection in passenger cars Mercedes-Benz (Fig. 4.3). It is equipped with two valves per cylinder. The combustion chamber is installed injector supplying fuel under high pressure (310 bar), which is ignited in the combustion chamber is directly exposed to hot compressed air. According to its characteristics the 5-cylinder engine corresponds to the 4-cylinder OM 604 Crankshaft 5-cylinder engine is mounted on six (instead of five) support bearings (Fig. 4.4). Since 1999 began production of inline 5-cylinder engine 270 CDI with system Common Rail, which replaced the previous model 290 TD.
