The settings of the engine and the description of the basic procedures of its service



To perform the following procedures require the following special tools:

  1. Compression;
  2. Tachometer and stroboscope;
  3. Measuring duration (the angle) of the closed condition of contacts of the breaker of the distributor (for models 4.2 L).

Service air cleaner
The air cleaner is equipped with a paper filter element. Check and cleaning of the element must be in accordance with the above schedule of routine maintenance, but not less frequently than every 3000 km on models 4.2 l (see. Accompanying illustration) and 5000 km on l models 3.0.

Replace the air cleaner element is recommended to perform at least once in every 40,000 kilometers. This interval should be reduced accordingly, if the vehicle is stressful conditions.

Before getting into the air cleaner intake air passes through a preliminary dust separator of the cyclone type, where it is twisted, causing most of the dust deposited on the walls of the separator. Accumulated dust should be periodically removed by squeezing a rubber cover in the form of a duck's beak on the bottom of the dust separator.

Paper filter elements are not subject to pour washing petrol or any other solvent. When impregnating element of fuel or oil it should be replaced with a new one.


PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Take one or more (depending on the design of the air cleaner), a wing nut securing the top cover of the air cleaner, remove the ring (s). Release the remaining clips, remove the lid and remove the filter element from the main body of the air cleaner.
  2. Wipe the inside of the cover and the air cleaner case, thoroughly clean them from dust and oil deposits. At the same time try to prevent foreign objects and other debris into the throat of the carburetor
  3. Check the condition of the item, if necessary, replace it. Install in reverse order. At the same time pay attention to the following points:
    1. The element must be installed exactly in the center of the main body of the air cleaner;
    2. Before tightening the wing nuts, clamps secure the top cover;
    3. First, tighten the wing nuts just before introducing them into contact with the surface of the cover, then tighten them even three turns.

Models 4.2 l of late years of release, equipped with fuel injection (EFI)

The air cleaner models equipped with EFI system installed viscous filter element, which does not need periodic cleaning between replacements.
Replacement of the filter element is carried out every 40 000 km (see. Accompanying illustration), this interval should be considered only indicative, as in the case of car operation in intense conditions.

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Disconnect the negative wire from the battery.
  2. Disconnect the electrical connector of the air flow meter, disconnect the meter vacuum hoses.
  3. Release the clamp on top of the air cleaner housing to the bottom.
  4. Lift the top half of the housing and remove the filter element. Install in reverse order, with the following highlights:
    1. Before assembling the air cleaner to thoroughly clean both halves of his shell inside and outside with a cloth soaked in oil, making sure that dirt does not hit the air flow meter.
    2. Track correctness of installation of the element in the upper half of the air cleaner housing.
    3. Track reliability of electrical connection to the meter of air flow.

Check and replace the fuel filter
In the engine compartment Inspect the fuel filter for any signs of being hit by mud and water (in the accompanying illustration shows the location of the fuel filter on models 3.0 L). In the event of such, or if the planned period came to change the filter, proceed to replace it.

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Remove the filter from the mounting clip and press a clamp filter near the hose from the fuel tank. When tightening the clamp to avoid damaging the hose.
  2. Install a filter drain capacity. Release hose clamps, remove the filter from the fuel lines and drain the remaining fuel from the hose into the prepared container.
  3. Put the hoses to the corresponding fittings of the new filter and tighten clamps.

When the in-line filter Make sure that the arrow on the body pointing in the direction of the flow of fuel.

  1. Remove the clip from the fuel pipe and install a filter in the mounting bracket.
  2. Start the engine and check the filter installed for signs of fuel leakage.

Models 4.2 l of late years of release, equipped with fuel injection (EFI)

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Relieve pressure in the power supply system, for which:
    1. Take the screws and lift located in the engine compartment of the relay, located next door to the battery. Remove the cover and remove the fuel pump fuse 15 A (see. Accompanying illustration);

4 - switch the windshield wiper
5 - switch Park / Neutral

    1. Start the engine and let it run at idle until spontaneous stop. To ensure completeness of the pressure relief switch starter for 10 seconds;
    2. Switch off the ignition.
  1. Disconnect the negative wire from the battery.
  1. Locate in the engine compartment fuel filter (see. Accompanying illustration), and set it under the drain container made of BMS-material and loosen the clamps on the filter with fuel hoses.
  1. Disconnect hoses from the filter and remove the filter, note the mounting direction.
  2. Install the new filter properly deploying it to the direction of flow of fuel. Check the condition of the fuel hoses, if necessary, replace.
  3. Connect the hose to the filter and tighten the clamps attaching them.
  4. Replace the fuel pump fuse and start the engine. Check the filter for signs of fuel leakage.

Adjust the belt tension

Correct adjustment of the belt tension forces to avoid their slip at the same time without overloading the bearings serviced units, which is especially important in the case of the generator and water pump.

The fan belt (s)

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Push the fan belt (s) in the area midway between the pulleys of the generator and water pump with a force of 98 N (the force of the thumb). The required belt deflection is 4 ÷ 8 mm model 3.0 liter and 13 ÷ 15 mm for models of 4.2 liters.

Replace belts on models 4.2 l necessarily produce complete.

  1. If necessary, loosen the locking bolt of the generator and the rotation of the adjustment bolt Achieve the desired belt force (largest deflection).
  2. Tighten the locking bolt of the generator, start the engine for about five minutes and re-check the belt tension.

Drive belt steering pump

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Push the drive belt for the middle section between the pulleys of the steering pump and the crankshaft with a force of 98 N (the force of the thumb). The required belt deflection is 11 ÷ 15 mm for models of 3.0 liters and 15 ÷ 17 mm for models of 4.2 liters.
  2. If necessary, loosen the locking bolt of the steering pump and the rotation of the adjustment bolt to obtain correct belt force (largest deflection).
  3. Tighten the steering pump retaining bolt, run the engine for about five minutes and recheck belt tension.

The drive belt air conditioning compressor

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Push the belt in the area midway between the pulleys air conditioning compressor and the crankshaft with a force of 98 N (the force of the thumb). The required belt deflection is 6 ÷ 10 mm for models 3.0 liter and 8 ÷ 10 mm for models of 4.2 liters.
  2. If necessary, loosen the clamping nut at the center of a tension roller and the rotation of the adjustment bolt to obtain correct belt force (largest deflection).
  3. Tighten the lock nut of a tension roller, start the engine for about five minutes and recheck belt tension.

Caring for the high-voltage wires

In order to suppress interference BB wire laid between the spark plug and distributor cap, as well as between the central terminal of the distributor cap and ignition coil fitted instead of the copper conductor carbon core. This core is easily broken, so do not be overly bend the wire and when disconnected from the spark plug to pull only for a tip, but in any case not the cord. Caution should be observed also in the connecting wires. Quitting explosive core wire can cause a misfire.

Check all wires for explosives exterior insulation defects (cracks and abrasions), in case of need make replacement. In no case should not attempt to repair damaged wires. Before checking the wire should be cleaned by wiping with a cloth soaked in kerosene, then dry thoroughly.

Measure the resistance of the resistive wire explosives

If available ohmmeter can be done measuring the resistance of the resistive wire explosives.


PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. After removing the distributor cap with explosives connected to it by wires, in turn, start to measure the resistance of each of the wires connecting the ohmmeter leads to the tip of the candle wires and the corresponding terminals inside the distributor cap (see. Accompanying illustration). Resistance should not exceed 30 ohms.
  1. If the result is greater than 30 ohms, remove the appropriate wire from the distributor cap and repeat the measurement has to separate conductors. If the result is confirmed, the wire must be replaced.
  2. Increased resistance in the cover of the distributor may be related to the oxidation of its terminals. In this case, corrosion should be removed from the terminals using a suitable scraper small or sandpaper.

Also, inspect the distributor inside and outside for the presence of cracks and coal paths between the terminals BB. If any such defects should be replaced by the cover.
Also check the condition of the carbon brush in the center of the distributor cap. in case of detection of traces of arcing and other damage, replace.

Check the status and service of spark plugs

Check status, cleaning and installation of inter-electrode gap of the spark plugs should be done on a regular basis, according to the schedule of routine maintenance of the car, every 20 000 km.

Before removing the candles make clean candle niches to avoid falling into the cylinders foreign objects and debris. If necessary, wipe or niche Blow them with air, using for this purpose an ordinary bicycle pump.

The working part of spark taken from in proper mechanical condition of the engine should be covered with a light touch of powder from light brown to gray-brown. After the service may appear normal signs of wear and erosion electrodes.

Available on the working part of spark thick black oil deposits (see. Accompanying illustration) indicates excessive oil consumption caused by poor mechanical condition of the engine, or that use candles with extremely low heat range.
When erosion of the electrodes to that shown in the accompanying illustrations degree candle to be considered worn out and must be replaced with a new one, suitable type.

New breaker contacts should be thoroughly washed prior to installation in a solvent to remove them with an anticorrosive coating.

  1. Replace the condenser valve and tighten the screw is mounted. Track correctness of a lining HB wires.
  2. Type in a little under a high-temperature grease heel rubbing block breaker contacts, a little grease, apply also on the lobes of the cam assembly.
  3. Install a new contact assembly in the base plate of the breaker and temporarily tighten the mounting screws, having tracked correctness of installation of the ground wire.
  4. Turn the engine so that the movable contact rubbing block was on the cam lobe.
  5. Loosen the screws securing the fixed contact with a suitable screwdriver and slide plate contacts in the desired direction, seeking clearance 0.45 ÷ 0.55 mm between the contacts (use a feeler-type blade - the blade of appropriate thickness should take place in the gap with a slight resistance). At the end of the gap adjustment tighten the screws securing the plate.
  6. Several times turn the motor and repeat the measurement.
  7. Connect the lead HB breaker to the unit on the wall of the insulator distributor and replace the screen rev limiter, the slider and the distributor.
  8. In accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, connect the meter to the motor duration of the closed condition of contacts of the distributor, tachometer and stroboscope and check the setting idle speed, the duration of the closed condition of contacts and ignition timing.

Models 4.2 l of late years of release, equipped with fuel injection (EFI)

The electronic system is almost maintenance free, although it is recommended to periodically removing, cleaning and inspection of the distributor cap.

Wipe clean with a soft cloth distributor cap and carefully inspect the inside and outside for cracks. At detection of cracks, signs of excessive wear or erosion terminals, replace the carbon brush cover with a rotary knob.

The order of removal, check the condition and installation of the distributor is described in the section on the fuel injection system and engine management in Chapter power supply system and exhaust system.

Terms of connecting diagnostic equipment

Some of tachometers, stroboscopes and analyzers ignition of the old type are not suitable for use in an electronic ignition. Before starting to perform the tests in life make sure you have at your disposal the diagnostic equipment.
Prevent accidental grounding wire tachometer on the weight in order to avoid a failure of the measuring equipment or components of the ignition system.

Strobe

Connect a strobe to the spark plug of the first cylinder (follow manufacturer's instructions). The numbering of cylinders and direction of rotation of the distributor of the engine 4.2 liters shown in the accompanying illustration.

In no case do not disconnect a stroboscope, battery powered car with the engine running, so a power surge could result in failure of the generator.
Avoid opening BB wires to prevent damage to the components of the ignition system.

Tachometer

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Make sure that the available fit a tachometer to check the ignition of your car.
  2. In systems with breaker contacts Connect the signal probe tachometer to the negative terminal of the ignition coil. Further connections are made in accordance with the instructions of the manufacturer of the device.
  3. In systems with electronic ignition, equipped with a special connector, connect the tachometer signal probe instrument to this jack. Further connections are made in accordance with the instructions of the manufacturer of the device.

Measuring duration (the angle) of the closed condition of contacts of the breaker

Check the duration of the closed condition of contacts of the breaker is possible only with the use of this device. On models with electronic ignition, this parameter can not be adjusted.

Connect the signal probe unit to the negative terminal of the ignition coil. Further connections are made in accordance with the instructions of the manufacturer of the device.
