Four wheel drive

MAZDA 323 is available in four-wheel drive version. To drive the rear wheels, additional elements. The drive front and rear wheels is connected to the propeller shaft. Cardan shaft drives the differential of the rear wheels, on which the rear wheels depart two drive shafts.

To compensate for the different rate of rotation of the front and rear wheels, for example, necessary when rotating transfer box (intermediate differential). The transfer case is designed as a planetary gear set with the sun and ring gears. Models with MY 10/90. with turbo: The transfer case equipped with a self-locking viscous coupling, which occurs when the difference between the speed of rotation of the front and rear wheels automatically connects the rear axle. A small difference in speed is acceptable, but the greater the difference, the greater the lockup clutch, allowing the rear wheels on the road carries a large force. Vehicles without turbo, and every 9/90 MY .: Transfer box can be locked by the driver via a switch on the center console. The electric motor is switched claw coupling which closes the transfer case. With this car can move freely through the deep snow or mud, if one wheel slips.

In normal conditions the intermediate differential should be connected, as otherwise the drive axle when turning heavily overloaded; moreover deteriorates dynamic characteristics. The transfer case is fixed to the gearbox, but has a separate oil filling. Gear oils need to be replaced as part of regular maintenance.

Manual transmission: Box filled with 2.6 liters (up to 9/89 turbo MY .: 3.6 liters) of oil for automatic transmissions DEXRON II above -18 ? C, API GL-4 class, the viscosity of SAE 75 W- 90.

Transfer Box: Filled 5.0 liters of gear oil grade API GL-5, viscosity SAE 90. At temperatures below -18 ? C is prescribed oil API GL-5 SAE 80W.

Rear axle differential: To be completed by 0.65 liters of transmission oil API GL-5, SAE 90 or SAE 80W-90, this oil must also be replaced regularly as part of maintenance. Repair work on the differential should be performed in a specialized workshop.
