Maintenance of the steering system

As a rule, the power steering gear is highly reliable and requires little maintenance during operation of the vehicle. Even in the case of pump failure the amplifier drive the vehicle can continue, but for turning the steering wheel in this case need to put much more effort than even a car without power steering.

The reason for the complete failure of the hydraulic booster is often a broken pump drive belt. Regularly check the condition of the belt - it can be worn or poorly tensioned. One sign of a weak belt tension is the emergence of recoil (reverse thrust) on the steering wheel. This is usually most noticeable when starting a vehicle from the scene when the wheels are turned to failure.

Properly maintain the amount of liquid in a tank of the amplifier. If necessary, top up liquid only indicated in the service manual for the brand. Note that the fluid to Automatic, you can not use all power steering. For sale is a lot of different brands of liquids. Improper fluid can spoil all the seals in the system.

Since the liquid is used not only as a working fluid of the hydraulic system, but also as a lubricant, it is important that the level does not fall below normal, otherwise the pump may be damaged. Watch out also for the purity of the liquid. Dirty or overdue liquid rapidly destroy the pump and hydraulic seals are located on the rack and pinion, requiring costly repairs later. Liquid replacement is rarely required. If you want to drain the liquid, open the expansion tank cap, disconnect one of the piping system and several times to turn the steering wheel from side to side to squeeze the liquid from the hydraulic system. Special opening of the overflow is usually absent. Filling the new liquid is made through the expansion tank. As a rule, with the hydraulic air pockets formed in violation of its performance. They should be removed. The easiest way to do this is as follows. Start the engine, open the expansion tank cap and bleed the system by turning the steering wheel several times from one extreme to the other. As the hydraulic pumping level in the reservoir will drop. Repeat this process as long as it stabilizes. After that, add fluid to the desired level and close the lid, after checking, not blocked vent hole in it (if available).

The most common fault is a servo fluid flow. With such defective vehicles usually can not pass inspection. Some old hydraulic Slight seepage of fluid through the bearings, shafts, etc., since it is virtually impossible to make a completely sealed. Inspect the system components from all sides for the early detection of possible leaks from pipelines and fittings, as well as not tight for the piping and other components.

Find out if you rub against pipes and hoses, of parts of the chassis and suspension. Faulty hydraulic line can lead to a breakthrough of liquid through the covers. Checks, turn the steering wheel from one extreme position to another. Small leaks can often be resolved by introducing a special sealing liquid additives which are commercially available. However, this will only be a short-term measure. In the case of pump failure it can be repaired using the repair kit new seals. Replacement seals little fix, if the pump is severely deteriorated.

For those who like to do everything yourself, repair the pump does not present great difficulties. However, before installing the pump repaired on the car, it is advisable to test it on the stand. If you suspect that the pump is worn out, contact a specialist in hydraulic actuator to have it checked its working pressure and correctly identified the problem. Generally speaking, the numerous advantages of steering, power many times outweigh the challenges posed by its possible faults. It is worth after you have traveled in a car with a modern system, seats for the car, which has no power steering system, and you will immediately "feel the difference".
