Setting the alignment

Optimal driving performance and minimum tire wear are achieved only when the correct position of the wheels exposed. With increased and irregular tire wear, as well as incontinence road - Poor directional stability and a lack of stability in curves, contact the workshop, with the help of optical methods to expose collapse of convergence.

Setting the alignment can not be done without proper equipment. Therefore here only describes the basic concepts required to install the alignment.

Convergence

Convergence is the angle at which the plane of the wheel deviates from the longitudinal axis of the vehicle. Positive convergence means that the wheels as measured at the height of their centers front converge slightly closer than the rear. The negative convergence means that the front wheels diverge more than the back.

At the Mercedes both front and rear wheels have a positive convergence: front-wheel drive - 0 ? 25 '(sport suspension 0 ? 10'), the rear wheels - 0 ? 25 '.

The collapse of the slope and a cross pin knuckle

Front axle

St - collapse
Sp - cross-toe in
4 - lower arm
5 - knuckle
6 - the upper suspension arm
7 - hinge knuckle
19, 20 - eccentric bolts
Of +/- 3 - adjusting course - 3 mm

The collapse of the slope and a cross pin knuckle reduce the transfer of shocks to the steering system and provide minimal friction on turns.

Called the collapse of the angle at which the plane of the wheel deviates from the vertical. Front wheels thus spaced at a negative camber at a point of contact with the road farther apart than on. At the Mercedes front and rear wheels have a negative camber.

Transverse inclination pin - is the angle between the pivot pin and the point of standing the vertical wheel, when viewed in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle.

The collapse of the slope and a cross pin knuckle together define a so-called shoulder running. Through appropriate design data, achieved greater stability when braking in the direction, especially if the wheels are on different road surfaces (for example, if the left wheel brake at a dry, and the right - the wet).

Caster ago

Caster ago - the angle between the pivot pin and in the vertical transverse direction. This inclination greatly affect management front wheels when driving in a straight line. Slight slope favors yaw when driving on bad roads or in crosswinds and cornering bad wheel returns to the center position.

Longitudinal inclination, along with the collapse of an exhibition with two bolts on the levers with eccentric suspension.

Prerequisites for the test

- The prescribed tire pressure;
- The vehicle is not loaded, but is prepared for the trip: a full tank, spare wheel and tools - all of which should be at the verification;
- Pre strongly shake the suspension;
- Steering wheel is straight;
- Adjust the play in the control arms;
- Adjust the play in the bearings of the wheels.

Checking / setting the positive front toe

The position of the front wheels as seen from above

Fine-tuning the alignment should be performed only in the original workshop. When a unilateral tire wear largely be checked toe. Convergence is checked when the shooting of the steering linkage. Convergence can be checked relatively simple means.

Should the above conditions be met for verification.
PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Set the wheels straight, cross steering must be positioned horizontally.
2. The middle position is achieved when the groove at the junction of the steering connection coincides with an identification mark on the steering mechanism (arrow). If the steering wheel is not quite right, remove and reposition.
3. Place the front between the front wheels sliding bar, and open its force of about 100 N (corresponding to 10 kg). To do this, use the special equipment or similar corporate post. Extendable necessary to simulate movement when the wheels tend to move apart outwardly.
4. Measure the toe. Total convergence of the front wheels should be 0 ? 25 '? 10' (for sports suspension 0 ? 10 '? 10'). This means that the front edges of the rim should be 1 mm closer than the rear.
5. Set a positive toe, rotating the lever steering linkage hexagon (10e). Pre-release clamping cone (10f), at the same time hold the lever at the hexagon spanner.
6. Establish positive convergence with the same angle on the left and the right, the rudder should thus be in the middle position.
7. Tighten the clamping cone (10f) to 50 Nm while holding the lever steering linkage hexagon spanner. Check cuff ball joint, it should not be wrinkled or damaged. After checking (setting), remove the device for razdvizhki wheels.
