Check operation of the water pump

Failure of the water pump can cause serious engine damage related to overheating.

There are several ways to verify the operation of the water pump without removing it from the engine. If the pump is faulty, replace it with a new or remanufactured.

Water pumps are equipped with a control or ventilation holes. In case of failure of the pump gland begins to ooze out of the hole cooler. In most cases, in order to locate and inspect the inspection opening, which is located at the bottom of the pump requires a flashlight.

In the event of failure of the water pump shaft gland of its pilot hole begins to trickle cooler.

If the water pump shaft bearings are faulty, they can emit howl that will emanate from the front of the engine compartment during engine operation. Wear of the shaft is shown in the form of beating up and down the water pump pulley. Do not confuse the howling, shrieking published bearings that take place in the slippage of the drive belt.

Grasp the pump flange try to shake it up and down the shaft for signs of his play.

There is a probability of failure of the pump when it is not accompanied by the characteristic features (howling and coolant seepage through the inspection hole). Sometimes there is corrosion of the rear of the rotor blades of the pump, resulting in a certain stage of its development in an unacceptable reduction in the efficiency of the pump. The only way to check this kind of assumption is the removal of the pump and a thorough investigation of his condition.
