Installing the connecting rod and piston assembly and check of backlashes in the connecting rod bearing

Before installing the connecting rod and piston assembly cylinder walls must be carefully cleaned, with the top edge of the cylinder are blunted, and the crankshaft - mounted engine.

Remove the cover from the first (number 1) connecting rod (see. Marks made during dismantling). Remove the old pads and wipe the surface of the connecting rod bearing cap and clean lint-free cloth - they must be absolutely clean.

Measuring the gap in the connecting rod bearing

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Wipe the back of the top of the new liners and put him to bed in the head of the connecting rod bearing. Make sure to insert the tab came in response to the deepening of the connecting rod. Under no circumstances should you try to begin to knock the insert in bed with a hammer, and take care not to damage the bearing surface, leaving a hangnail and bullies. Lubrication at this stage should not be done!
  2. Wipe the back of the second liner and insert it in the connecting rod cap. Again, make sure to hit the tongue recess in the response. Do not lubricate the insert. It is extremely important that at this stage of the mating surfaces of the pads and the beds were absolutely clean and dry.
  3. Position the lock rings on the piston as shown in the accompanying illustrations.
  1. Before installing the engine connecting rod and piston assembly place the piston rings as shown in the figure.
  1. Pull pieces of plastic or rubber hose to the bolts connecting rod bearing cap.
  2. Lubricate pistons and piston rings with pure impellent oil and put on the piston mandrel tool for compressing the piston rings. Leave the piston skirt projecting from the mandrel to a height of approximately 6.4 mm for the introduction of the piston into the cylinder. Ring must be compressed so that it is flush with the surface of the piston.
  3. Rotate the crankshaft so that the first crank pin was in a position BDC and lubricate the cylinder walls motor oil.
  4. Oriented piston so that arrow (or recess) at its bottom turned out to be facing forward on the engine, carefully insert piston-connecting rod assembly into the first cylinder, resting the bottom edge of the mandrel tool for compressing the piston rings into the surface of the block.

The recess on the underside of the piston to be drawn down the engine.

  1. Tap the upper edge of the mandrel tool to ensure tight pressing its lower edge to the block around its perimeter.
  2. Start gently tap the bottom of the piston hammer wooden handle at the same time directing the bottom head of a rod in the neck of the shaft. Piston rings have a tendency to fly out from the mandrel tool before the entering into the cylinder, thus provides a constant reliable clamping of the mandrel to the unit. Work slowly, and at the first sign of occurrence of resistance to immediately stop the introduction of the assembly into the cylinder. Find out the cause of jamming and eliminate it before you begin the procedure to continue. Under no circumstances should you try to insert the piston into the cylinder leaning force - it can cause damage to the rings and / or piston!
  3. After installation, assembly, before finally connecting rod bearing caps set, you must make a measurement of the gap in it.
  4. Cut a piece of wire from a calibrated measuring set Plastigage, a length slightly shorter than the width of the connecting rod bearing and place the segment on the crank pin shaft parallel to the axis.
  1. Place the calibrated plastic wire segment of the measuring set Plastigage parallel to the axis of the neck.
  1. Clean the bearing surface of the connecting rod cap, remove protective hoses from bolts and install the cover. Make sure that the marks on the lid faces turned in the same direction as the mark on the rod.
  2. Screw the nut and in three stages, tighten them with demanded effort.

To avoid false readings, use a torque wrench thin replaceable head that will not get stuck between the nut and the surface of the cover. If you still jamming occurred, gently lift the head, freeing her, and only then continue tightening. Keep cranking during the tightening of nuts connecting rod bearing cap.

  1. Give nuts and remove the cover, taking care not to disturb the integrity of the flattened plastic thread.
  2. Measure the width of the flattened wire on the scale printed on the packaging of the measuring set. The scale is marked in the values of the bearing clearance. Compare results of measurements to requirements of Specifications.
  1. Measure the width of the flattened plastic thread to determine the connecting rod bearing clearance (Make sure to use the correct scale - printed on the package as a metric scale and scale in terms of the American standard (inch)).
  1. If the clearance does not meet the requirements of the Specifications, it may be mounted inserts wrong size (which means you need to replace them). Before coming to a final conclusion about the need to replace the inserts, make sure that at their backs in the process of measuring the gap were not dirt or oil. In addition, the diameter of the cervix measurement again. If calibrated flattened wire is wider on one side of the cervix, the latter and the shaft has a taper bore needs.

Final installation of the connecting rod

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Carefully scrape off traces of flattened plastic wire bearing surfaces and neck. Use your fingernail or the edge of a credit card.
  2. Make impeccably clean bearing surfaces, then evenly coat them with a thin layer of molybdenum or assembly of motor lubrication. To provide access to the bearing surface of the connecting rod and the piston must be pushed slightly up on the cylinder - do not forget to put on the cover bolts protective hoses.
  3. Put the rod back to the neck, remove the protective hoses with bolts, put the lid on the screws and tighten the nuts with demanded effort. Tightening again performed in three stages.
  4. Repeat the entire process (including measurement gap) for the remaining connecting rod and piston assembly.
  5. The important point that should not in any case remember are:
  6. After installation is complete, all the connecting rod and piston assembly several times a cranked shaft by hand, checking for obvious jamming.
  7. Finally, check the axial play of the connecting rods (Section Removing the connecting rod and piston assemblies).
  8. Compare the measured axial clearance with the requirements of the Specifications. If the play before the assembly met the requirements and were installed former shaft and connecting rods, the backlash should remain normal. In the case of installation of new shaft and connecting rods play the value could exceed the allowed limits. Then, remove the rods and send them to a workshop service centers for machining.
  9. The installation of the remaining components continue in the reverse order of their removal. Further information should be sought Chapters straight six-cylinder engine (6-cylinder engine) and engine V8 (engine V8).
