Removing the crankshaft

Removing the crankshaft can be made only after the engine has been removed from the car. It is also assumed that the flywheel / drive plate, vibration damper, distribution chain, oil pan, oil pump and piston connecting rod assembly has been removed from the engine.

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Before proceeding to the recovery of the crankshaft, measure the value of its axial play. Secure dial gauge plunger-type block in such a way that its rod turned disposed coaxially with the shaft and only the touched one of the crank cheek (or shaft journal end).

Determination of axial play of the crankshaft using a dial gauge type plunger.

  1. Pull the shaft all the way back and reset the meter. Then push the shaft all the way forward and read the instrument. The measured movement of the shaft corresponds to the amount of its axial play. If the play exceeds the limit, check the thrust surface of the shaft for signs of wear. If no obvious signs of wear and tear, installation of new thrust bearings should help remedy the situation.
  2. In the absence of available dial meter, you can use the stylus blade type. Carefully pull the shaft to one side until it stops. Fill probes clearance between the shaft and the front face of the persistent radical bearing. The total thickness of the probe will be equal to the axial play of the shaft.

Measurement of axial clearance of the crankshaft using a probe-type blade.

  1. Check the crankshaft bearing caps of the crankshaft for the presence of identification tags. The covers must be sequentially numbered in order of their installation on the front of the engine to the rear. If marks are absent, put it on your own using a center punch. Main bearing caps are often equipped with a cast on their upper arrow pointing the direction forward on the engine. Loosen the bolts on the main bearing caps 1/4 turn in one go, as long until you can loosen their hands. If the attachment of any of the covers used studs, memorize their location to install the assembly in place.

Main bearing caps are usually numbered from front to back on the engine (arrow) - in the V8 engine capacity of 5.2 liters of rooms are located on the passenger side covers.

  1. Tap the lid Carefully hammer with soft brisk, then separate them from the unit. If necessary, use bolts as points of support for the removal of caps using the lever. Try not to drop the ear if they will be removed with the cap.
  2. Carefully remove the crankshaft of the engine. It is reasonable to resort to the help of an assistant here - the shaft is heavy enough. Leaving the shells on their places in the block and covers, install main bearing caps to their former places and by hand tighten the mounting bolts.
