Neutralising the exhaust gases of diesel car

Diesel engines C-Class are equipped with standard catalytic converter and exhaust gas recirculation. The catalyst is located in the exhaust system in the front exhaust pipe instead of the additional muffler.

Catalyst housing (1) and tubular connection made of stainless steel. The supported catalyst is a noble metal layer promotes further oxidation of exhaust gases. Sensitive to shocks monolith (3) is fixed by a metal fabric (2).

In a diesel engine is used so-called oxidation catalyst. This catalyst oxidizes carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC) to water (H 2 O) and carbon dioxide (CO 2) is harmless for the environment.

When the exhaust gas recirculation of them again falls back into the combustion chamber. Thereby, the combustion temperature is reduced, leading to less formation of nitrogen oxides (NO x).
