Motor oil

Engine oil prevents dry friction and wear of the pistons, cylinders, crankshaft bearings and the valve mechanism further tightens the clearance between the piston and the cylinder walls. It takes over the functions of cooling, the heat from the inner walls and engine components. In addition, the motor oil protects against corrosion, keeps particles suspended mining and chemical binding portion of the combustion products.
Current lubricants prepared from refined oil. Manufacturers oils added thereto special additives, which make up 20% of the engine oil. These additives, in particular, to protect the oil from oxidation and prevent its foaming at high speeds.
One measure of the viscosity-temperature characteristics of a viscosity index VI - an empirical dimensionless parameter for evaluating the viscosity of the oil temperature. The higher the viscosity index, the lower the viscosity of the oil is temperature dependent. The oil of high viscosity index is better flowability at low temperatures and a high viscosity at the operating temperature of the engine.
The service life of the engine oil is influenced by such factors as the amount of water, the quality and availability of the fuel combustion products. Therefore, a regular oil change.
Synthetic engine oil in most cases more expensive mineral. But the high price offset by lower oil and fuel consumption, extended oil change.

Technical Dictionary
Engine oil and its classification
Viscosity - the resistance to liquid flow. In winter, the use of the vehicle should apply low-viscosity engine oils that provide easy starting. In summer operation is preferable to use a viscous oil.
The system SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers USA). The designation indicates the two oil viscosity: winter - with the letter ?W? and the summer - without lettering, eg SAE 5W-30. Less than the first number, the better the fluidity at low temperatures. The larger the second number, the higher the oil resistance to high temperatures.
System ACEA (non-profit association of Automotive Engineers). The system operates from 1996, replacing a system of SSMS. For gasoline engines used Class A diesel - Class B.
SSMS system (Engineering Union of the European Union). Designation oil consists of the letter ?G? (gasoline engine) or ?D? (diesel engine), and one number. For example, SSMS G4. The higher the number, the better the quality of motor oil.
System API (American Petroleum Institut). The designation of oil - two letters, the first of which ?S? (gasoline engine) or "C" (diesel). For example, API or API-SA-CA. The closer to the end of the second letter of the alphabet, the higher the quality of the oil.

Selection of engine oil
From Mercedes receives the norms Engineering Union of the European Union (SSMS) for its gasoline engine recommends the following oils: CCMC-G4, CCMC-G5, API-SG, ACEA A2-96 and ACEA A3-96.
The oils of API classification or ACEA used only if there is no available SSMS oils.
In the European part with a wide range of summer and winter temperatures throughout the year, you can use the oil viscosity class 15 W-40 or 10 W-40. Only at very low or high temperatures persisting for a long time, you should use a different oil viscosity grade for advice, contact a specialist.
