Ignition control system check

See. See also Section Troubleshooting in the introduction at the beginning of the Manual.

general information

Components of the ignition / engine control are among the elements of increased reliability and the majority of failures usually are related to violation of the quality of contact connections or damaged wiring. BB electrical breakdowns often occur as a result of pollution, moisture or damaged insulation. Before you come to the conclusion that the failure of any of the elements of the system, always first check the condition of the wiring and its respective contact connections.

Do not check serviceability of the power supply to the spark plug by removing them from the wiring and test it on the weight of the engine - this kind of diagnosis, in addition to the risk of electric shock, fraught with the danger of failure of the ignition coil and ECM. In violation of the stability of engine operating speed and should not try to pinpoint the problem by disconnecting the serial wiring from the spark plugs.

The following test can determine the cause of the fault, the symptoms of which are obvious enough (failure of a starter, misfire, etc.). Some less obvious violations can not show himself by automatic switching control system in the emergency mode of operation, and appear only in increased fuel consumption, violation of stability of turns of idling, reducing the efficiency of return of the engine, the occurrence of knocking and so forth., - Consult the Car service specialist.

The engine does not start

Do not forget that the reason for not starting the engine may be a failure of the immobilizer anti-theft device.

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Check the condition of the fuse plug (see chap. Onboard electric equipment), in case of need make replacement.
  2. If the starter does not turn or rotate the engine too slowly, first of all check if the proper functioning of the starter and the battery. Connect a voltmeter to the battery terminals and measure its output voltage while cranking the engine, - if the measurement is less than 9.5, check the operation status of the battery, starter and charging system components.

Do not activate the starter continuously for more than 10 seconds!

  1. Acting strictly in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, connect the strobe and turn the engine starter, - activation of the strobe lamp confirms serviceability of giving explosives voltage on spark plugs. Check the condition of the actual candles. If strobe does not work, evaluate the state of explosives wiring (see chap. Current care and maintenance).
  2. If you do not make sure of serviceability of sparking coils (EC) Ignition (the easiest way to replace a known good coil - alternatively, measure the resistance of the windings). Do not rush to throw the suspected refusal coil - first check the quality and reliability of its contact connections.
  3. Another reason for the failure of the engine is started may be a violation of a powerful buffer output stage is an integral part of the engine control module (ECM), and the failure of any of the information sensor management system (CMP / CKP), or other concomitant unit, - check the memory ECM recorded in the presence of its diagnostic codes (see. Power supply systems, engine control / emission control and exhaust).

Misfire

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. The cause of the misfire is often a violation of the quality of electrical contact connections on the ignition coil terminals, or any of the information sensor (CMP / CKP).
  2. Turn off the ignition and check the corresponding connectors for signs of oxidation and reliability of fixing terminals.
  3. Assess BB wiring. Make sure the wires do not touch the metal parts of the engine - if the wire with damaged insulation the metals, while the engine sparking will not occur between the contacts corresponding to the spark plugs, and in place of the breakdown. In identifying even slight damage to the insulation of at least one of the wires, replace the entire set.

Make sure in good condition explosive electrical easiest way to replace the entire set of known-good.

  1. At serviceable wiring cause misfire may be the failure of the proper candle or coil assembly - Replace the spark (see chap. Current leaving and service), check the condition of the coil. Another cause of the occurrence of misfiring can be damage or pollution ? the crankshaft position sensor (CKP).
  2. Finally, make the DTC reading and clearing the memory module on-board self-test (ECM).
