general information

The ignition system ensures the ignition Combustion cylinder air-fuel mixture. For the formation of the spark intensity required 12-volt on-board supply voltage is converted into a high-voltage ignition coils (BB) - 30 000 V.

On considered in this Guide models KIA Sportage used electronic direct ignition (DIS), functioning under the control of ECM, is guided by the testimony of the crankshaft position sensor (CKP) and camshaft (CMP) shafts.

By analyzing the information from sensors, determines the moment ECM readiness of each of the engine cylinders to ignite the injected therein an air-fuel mixture, - the command ECM reel BB generates a voltage causing breakdown of the gap between the electrodes of the respective spark.

Ignition coils

On considered in this manual-equipped models DOHC engine uses two ignition coils mounted directly above the spark plugs of the second and fourth cylinders. Thus sparking command ECM occurs in both of the two cylinders, the piston of one of which is at the end of the compression stroke, the other - at the end of the exhaust stroke, the main voltage drop falls on the candle the cylinder of the compression stroke due to the much higher pressure inside it. Sparking power in the second cylinder will be minimum (idle spark) while ensuring that the remaining post-combustion in the combustion chamber of the molecules of air-fuel mixture, to achieve more efficient emission control. Sparks comes a time in the cylinders of 1/2 and 3/4.

Coil not require regular maintenance and in case of a failure should be replaced. ??

Camshaft position sensor (CMP)

The sensor is installed at the rear of the cylinder head and the camshaft position monitor, giving the corresponding information to the control module.

The crankshaft position sensor (CKP)

CKP sensor is fixed to the transmission housing and determines the speed and position of the crankshaft by tracking the time of passage past the sensor of its lobes mounted on the flywheel / ring gear drive disk.

Spark plug

Spark plugs, when applying them BB voltage coils provide sparking caused by breakdown of the interelectrode gap and leads to ignition in the cylinders supplied air-fuel mixture. Check the state of the spark plugs should be carried out regularly in accordance with the schedule of routine maintenance of the car (see chap. Current care and maintenance).

High-voltage (IV) wiring

BB wiring used to connect the ignition coil with candles. Periodically check the condition of the insulation and contact tips explosives wires.

Motor protection against detonation

Characteristic for modern engines high compression ratio, improving fuel efficiency, as well as changes in the quality of fuel used to increase the tendency of the engine to knock. A high compression detonation limits are often set within a range of ignition timing (for minimal fuel consumption) or shifted to the delay side. Remedies to prevent detonation combustion of the working mixture under all operating conditions of the engine.

Knock sensor (KS), mounted in a suitable position of the engine, responsive to the detonation occurring at high frequency oscillations molding block and transforms them into electric signals to the ECM.

So-called "measurement window" is synchronized with the rotation of the crankshaft, and for allocating data characterizing detonation using a bandpass filter. The input information is compared with the signals obtained by the combustion without detonation of the mixture, after which the ECM in multiple cycles of the engine provides torque bias ignition delay side required to remedy the situation. The unit then returns to the original optimal value. Most importantly, the ignition timing shift may occur individually for each cylinder, while the others continue to operate normally.

security measures

When servicing the direct ignition systems should take special precautions:

  • Do not touch the ignition system wiring and connectors disconnects it when the engine is running / rotating starter;
  • Do not disconnect the battery when the engine is running;
  • Disconnection connector wiring of sensors and control modules is made only after first disconnecting the battery;
  • Perform disconnecting / connecting the electrical ignition system and connection / disconnection of any diagnostic and measuring equipment only when the ignition is switched off;
  • Do not allow to carry out maintenance work, electronic ignition system of people with implanted pacemaker;
  • In no case do not allow the terminals of grounding the ignition coil to ground;
  • Do not connect the terminals of the test lamp to ignition coils.
