Checking the engine starting system

Wiring Diagram starter (2) and the traction relay (1)

Before the test, make sure that the battery is fully charged, and the anti-theft system is not activated.

PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. If the car has an automatic transmission and the starter does not turn on, make sure that the selector is in position P or N.
2. Make sure that the battery is fully charged, on the tips of the wires and the terminals of the battery and the starter no corrosion.
3. If the starter rotates, and the flywheel - no, you may have a faulty starter overrunning clutch (it does not allow Bendix rotate with the engine after launch). In this case, the starter must be repaired or replaced. Another cause of this is the strong weakening of the starter mounting bolts (Bendix gear does not engage with the crown of the flywheel).
4. When you turn on the starter motor does not turn it, and magnetic switch operates (audible click), or the battery is low, or terminals oxidized magnetic switch or faulty starter (if the motor vehicle is not jammed).
5. When you turn on the starter is not even clicks the retractor relay defective battery severed wiring or faulty magnetic switch.
6. To check the functioning of the retractor relay, connect the positive terminal of the starter with a small terminal magnetic switch. If the starter motor starts to rotate, magnetic switch in the order, and any faulty ignition or the wiring, or the sensor selector automatic transmission (if the selector is in position P or N).
7. If, after the closure of terminals starter rotates slowly, make sure that the battery is charged, and the wires are attached securely. If the motor vehicle is stuck partially filled with oil or high viscosity, the starter will rotate slowly.
8. Start the engine and warm up to operating temperature. Stop the engine, remove the fuel pump fuse and disconnect the electrical connectors from the ignition coil.
9. Connect the voltmeter positive lead to the positive terminal of the battery and the negative - to the negative terminal.
10. Turn on the starter and, once stabilized voltmeter, write them down. Do not operate the starter for more than 15 seconds. If the rotational speed of a normal starter, and a voltage of 10.5 volts, all right. If the voltage is 10.5 volts or higher, and the rotation speed of the starter is low, scorched contact magnetic switch, faulty wiring or starter. If the voltage is less than 10.5 volts, and the low speed of rotation of the starter, the starter is faulty or discharged battery.
