Installation and check of backlashes in connecting rod bearing

A warning

Description applies only to connecting rod bearings standard size. Repair connecting rod bearings to size groups are not divided.

New connecting rod bearings are matched by size group codes applied to the crankshaft.

Codes size groups applied or cheek of the crankshaft near the neck of 1st cylinder (from the camshaft chain drive), or on the cheek near the neck of the 4-cylinder (at the flywheel or the drive plate torque converter). Four-digit code indicates the size groups crankpins of the crankshaft, the first digit refers to the neck of the cylinder 1, and the fourth - to the neck of a 4-cylinder. A five-digit code refers to the size groups of the crankshaft main journals (see. Subsection 3.2.2.8.2).

To pick up a connecting rod bearing shells, it is necessary to know the dimension group of the crank pin of the crankshaft to the cylinder, and then the attached table to determine the correct insert oriented color coded, which is applied as a dot on the side surface of the insert.

Checking the connecting rod bearing clearance

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Clean the outer surface of the rod and the surface of the bore liners under inserts rods and covers of rods.
2. Push down on the ear, put the top and bottom inserts into place. Make sure that the protrusions on the bearing shell entered the sample in a rod (indicated by arrows) and the connecting rod cap.
3. When installing the inserts do not touch the working surface of loose leaves with your fingers. Make sure the oil hole in the upper connecting rod bearings exactly aligned with the holes in the connecting rod. If the check clearance will be carried out with the old pads, then make sure that the inserts are installed in its place.
4. The connecting rod bearing clearance can be checked in two ways. When determining the gap the first method should be collected to cover the connecting rod bearings and connecting rods, having tracked correctness of the relative orientation of these parts. Tighten the nuts of the connecting rod caps with the specified torque and measure the inner diameter of each collected a pair of inserts using bore gauge with dial gauge or caliper. Backlash in radical bearings is defined as the difference between the inner diameter of the assembled connecting rod bearings and the diameter of the respective crankpins of the crankshaft.
5. The second method (more accurate) is to apply the plastic gauge wire Plastigage circular cross-section, laid on carefully cleaned surfaces crankpins.
6. Install the connecting rod bearings, correct their orientation. Each crank pin crankshaft lay on the gauge of the wire segment.
7. Clean the surface of the connecting rod bearings and connecting rods are set to the corresponding crankshaft journals. Install the connecting rod bearing caps, orient them on existing tags, or labels put at dismantling.
8. Tighten the nut covers (see. When tightening the change in the position of the wire is not allowed, and not allowed rotation of the crankshaft.
9. Remove the covers of rods, while preventing rotation of the crankshaft or displacement gauge wire. Compare the width of the flattened wire to a scale on packing and define backlash in radical bearings.
10. If the backlash differs from standard, the reason can be the wrong choice rod bushings (or increased wear if verified inserts were in operation). Before coming to a conclusion about the need to replace the inserts, make sure that the surfaces between the covers or connecting rods and the liner when measuring no dirt or oil. If the width of a flattened wire with one end larger, it indicates a taper pin portion.
11. If the backlash differs from the norm when measuring with the old pads, then repeat the measurement with new inserts. If, however, and with new inserts a gap higher than normal, you should consult Customer Car Dealer, or contact the person on the engine to get advice on how to proceed. Perhaps that will have reground crankshaft crankpins repair and replace liners.
12. If necessary, purchase inserts corresponding size group and repeat the measurement gap in the connecting rod bearings.
13. At the end of a fingernail scrape or wood chip residues gauge wire to the crankshaft main journals, without damaging their surface.

Installing the connecting rod and piston group

Further description is conducted on the assumption that the assembly will be performed after the crankshaft assembly installed with all main bearings and caps (closures with a frame).

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Make sure to install the connecting rod bearing (cm. Nos. 4 and 5). If new bearings are installed, then carefully remove the remnants of the preservative grease, wash them in paraffin. Wipe clean connecting rods and bearings cloth lint-free cloth.
2. Verify the correct alignment of the joints of the piston rings and squeeze the ring a special device.
3. Lubricate the cylinders, pistons and rings, then put the pistons in gathering with rods in the order in which these items will be installed on the engine.
4. The assembly start with 1st cylinder. Ensure proper alignment of joints of piston rings (see. Subsection 3.2.2.12) and squeeze the ring a special device.
5. Insert the piston and connecting rod assembly into the first cylinder. Align the piston so that the mark on the bottom of the piston (in the form of arrows or lines) facing toward the cover of a chain drive of cam. Lightly tap the piston hammer handle or a piece of wood that went into the cylinder piston and the piston head is brought to a demountable plane of the block of cylinders.
6. Make sure that the connecting rod bearings are installed properly and liberally lubricate the inserts and the crank pin of the crankshaft. Carefully, so as not to damage the surface of the cylinder, tighten the connecting rod to the crankshaft journal. Put a rod cover with insert and tighten the nuts by hand. Note that the plane on the connecting rod cover on a connecting rod, which is marked, should be aligned (this means that the connecting rod bearing mounting projections are opposed to each other).
7. Tighten the connecting rod caps with the moment of the 1st stage tightening torque with a torque wrench and the end of the head (left). Then tighten the nuts on the corner of 2nd stage of tightening or in the absence of a key with an angular scale, tighten to the 2nd stage (pictured right).
8. Turn the crankshaft and check for freedom of rotation. If new parts are installed, it must feel a marked resistance to rotation of the crankshaft constant, but the crankshaft must rotate smoothly, without jamming.
9. Similarly establish other pistons and connecting rods.
10. Install the cylinder head, the chain (or chains) drive camshafts and oil pan.
