Check and replacement of wires of the battery

Periodically check the battery wires along their entire length for damage, cracks and burnouts insulation, as well as signs of corrosion veins. Poor contact wires of the battery terminals may cause difficulties when starting the engine and reducing the power developed by them.

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Check the condition of the terminal worn on the tips of wires for cracks, looseness in the core and corrosion. The presence of brittle korkoobraznogo white plaque on the battery terminals, lugs and wire insulation is under the sign of corrosion of the wires, in case of which it must be replaced. Check terminals and wiring terminals for deformation, loss or weakening of the fastening bolts and corrosion.
  2. When removing the wires are always first disconnect the battery negative (and connect the latter), as otherwise there is a possibility of accidental shorting to ground the positive pole of the key by loosening / tightening the screw terminals. Even if replacement is subject to a positive lead, before you start to take it off, disconnect the battery negative (for more information on replacing the battery cable, see chap. Adjustment and routine maintenance).

If the radio in your car is equipped by a security code before to disconnect the battery negative cable, make sure that you know this code.

  1. Disconnect the wires from the old battery, then make sure each of them to the opposite end and disconnect from the terminal pulling the starter relay and ground. Try to remember how each of the wires laid in the engine compartment with a view to properly install them in the assembly.
  2. If necessary, replacement of any of the wires (or both) to take to the store older. It is essential that the new wire on the tip design, size and other parameters correspond to removal. Wires have distinctive features that facilitate correct their identification in the selection: the positive wire is usually covered with insulation is red and has a larger cross-section; ground wire is usually black in color, and has a smaller cross-section.
  3. Remove the screw terminal connections of the traction relay and the mass of the engine corrosion with a wire brush. Lightly coat the battery terminals with acid-free corrosion inhibitor or petroleum jelly to prevent corrosion in the future.
  4. Attach the wire to the terminal of the traction relay or ground and tighten the retaining bolt / nut.
  5. Before you connect the wire to the battery, make sure that it reaches out to her without tension.
  6. First connect the positive wire, trace - negative.
