Troubleshooting starter without removing it from the car

Before you begin to diagnose the starter make sure the battery is fully charged.

If the starter does not turn on at all, make sure that the selector lever is in the correct position ("P" or ?N?) (AT) or the clutch pedal is depressed (RT).

Make sure the battery is charged and the terminals of all wires and terminals (the battery and the traction relay) is not corroded or loose.

If the starter rotates, but does not scroll the engine it says freewheel slippage in starter and the need to replace the latter.

After turning the starter begins to rotate, but clearly audible click emitted when you switch the traction relay, the problem lies in the failure batteries, miscommunication or failure of the starter (unless jammed motor).

If the plug of the traction relay does not click, switching when the starter battery is either defective or burned out fuse (open circuit) or is a defect of the switch.

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. To check the serviceability of the relay, connect a wire from the kit to start the vehicle from the auxiliary power between the positive () terminal of the battery and a small terminal wire ignition relay. If we now turn on the starter relay to the procedure and the problem malfunction ignition switch of the permission of start, start relay or wiring.
  2. Find the start relay in the power distribution center. Pull the switch and make it checked (absolutely similar to checking the relay ASD and fuel pump in Section Checking fuel pressure and the functioning of the fuel pump of the Head of the Power supply system and the exhaust system (see. Also illustrate the "Measure the resistance between terminals 86 and 85 ..." and " Also measure the resistance between terminals 30 and 87A ... "Chapter power supply system and exhaust).

Location start relay.

  1. If the starter motor still does not rotate, remove it together with the relay for disassembly, detailed diagnostics and repair / replacement.
  2. If the starter motor turns the engine too slowly, first check the battery level and the condition and reliability of fastening of all terminal connections. Partial engine seizure or filling it with oil too high viscosity can also be the cause of its slow rotation starter.
  3. Start the engine and let it warm up to normal operating temperature, then remove the coil wire from the distributor cap and ground it on the weight of the engine.
  4. Connect the voltmeter positive lead to the positive terminal of the battery and the negative - to negative.
  5. Crank the engine and read the voltmeter. Do not operate the starter continuously for more than 15 seconds. Indications of over 9 rotating at normal speed starter is considered the norm. If the reading is above 9, but the speed of rotation is insufficient, check the condition of the contacts of the traction relay or electric circuit connectors. If a fixed voltage below 9 and the rotation speed is insufficient, likely faulty starter.
