Check of serviceability and replacement of the camshaft position sensor

Check

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Uncover the distributor (Head of Adjustment and routine maintenance).
  2. Insert the back of the harness connector of the distributor of a straightened paper clip or wire pins to make contact with the terminals. Try setting pins when not to damage the wiring.
  3. Connect the positive lead of the voltmeter to the output wire of the sensor (see. Please refer to the diagram in chapter System-board electrical equipment.
  4. By connecting a voltmeter:
    • On engines in volume of 4.0 l starter turn the engine so that the slider of the distributor turned to the position for 10 hours. Ring sensor will enter into the magnetic induction sensor.
    • On engines of 5.2 liters the engine a starter so that the slider back turned on the engine. The movable ring sensor will enter into the magnetic induction sensor.
  5. When you turn the ignition key to ON (without starting the engine), the voltmeter should show a value of about 5V.
  6. If no supply, check the voltage on the wire supply (white and black). It should be approximately 8 when rotated to the ON key.
  7. If voltage is present, connect the probe of the voltmeter to the signal wires (black and gray) and turn the engine, watching the readings. The reading should fluctuate between zero and 5.0 V, indicating that the correct ripple ignition signal.
  1. Connect the positive lead of the voltmeter to the black and gray wire sensor connector Camshaft position and make sure that his testimony pulsate between 0 and 5.0 V.
  1. If the camshaft position sensor does not pass any of these tests, replace it.

Replacement

V8 engines equipped with a camshaft position sensor, which can be removed from the valve without removing the latter from the engine (regardless of type), whereas for removal of the sensor for 6-cylinder engines, it is first necessary to disassemble the valve (dependent type sensor).

Sensor dependent type (engine V8)

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Disconnect the negative wire from the battery.

If the radio in your car is equipped by a security code before to disconnect the battery negative cable, make sure that you know this code.

  1. Remove the distributor cap (Head of Adjustment and routine maintenance).
  2. Disconnect the electrical connectors of the camshaft sensor.
  3. Remove the sensor from the distributor.

Removing the camshaft position sensor independent type of distributor.

  1. Install in reverse order.

Sensor dependent type (6-cylinder)

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Disconnect the negative wire from the battery.

If the radio in your car is equipped by a security code before to disconnect the battery negative cable, make sure that you know this code.

  1. Remove the valve (Section Removal and installation of the distributor).
  2. Mark the position of the gear and the shaft with respect to the cylindrical pin - it is useful.
  3. With a small punch, remove the cylindrical pin (finger) from the distributor shaft.

Components of the distributor-type dependent.

  1. Remove from the distributor gear, and thrust washer.
  2. Remove the shaft from the body of the distributor.
  3. Give the screw securing the camshaft position sensor and remove the lever.
  4. Remove the wiring harness grommet from the slot in the valve housing and remove the sensor.
  5. Install in reverse order.
