Service exhaust system - general information

Check and repair the components of the exhaust system must be carried out after a sufficient period of time after switching off the engine when the components have cooled down completely. In addition, working under the car make sure about the reliability of its fastening in the raised position.

The exhaust system consists of the exhaust manifold (s), catalytic converter, muffler, exhaust pipes and connectors, brackets, hangers and pipe straps and clips. The system components are mounted to the bottom of the vehicle by means of brackets and rubber hangers. Improper installation of any components leads to unwanted noise and vibrations transmitted through the vehicle body.

Bracket exhaust pipe is attached to the bottom of the vehicle by means of a rubber suspension.

The muffler and pipes

In order to maintain the components of the exhaust system is constantly in a satisfactory condition and to prevent the occurrence of noise and vibration, regularly check the condition of its components. Inspect components for damage, deformations, the dispersed seams, holes, flagging fasteners, signs of excessive corrosion and other defects due to the presence of which may leak exhaust gases and getting them into the car. The damaged section of the exhaust system should not attempt to restore - they must be replaced. Do not forget to check the state of the catalytic converter.

If a section of the system as a result of the impact of corrosion can not be dismemberment, for their removal may require the use of the welding equipment. The easiest way to solve this problem is to appeal for help in the shop car workshop, where sections will be separated by means of gas cutting. However, if the constrained circumstances cash (or in order to obtain self-gratification) can try to make the removal of faulty parts independently. To do this, (if there is no opportunity to use flame cutoff) can divide the sections of the system using a hacksaw for metal. If you have access to a source of compressed air and it is possible to use a pneumatic cutting / chopping attachment, use it. Do not forget to wear safety glasses and work gloves.

When repairing the exhaust system should follow the following simple rules:

  • Move along the system from the end to the beginning.
  • To facilitate the mounting of giving pre-soak his penetrating oil
  • When installing the system components required to replace gaskets, hangers and clamps.
  • Threaded fasteners prior to installation of the grease antiprihvatyvayuschim sealant.
  • Make sure that between the newly installed system components and the bottom surface of the vehicle has sufficient clearance necessary to prevent damage to the interior trim, floor mats and the insulating layer as a result of overheating. Pay special attention to the quality of the catalytic converter and thermofilter.

Catalytic converter

The catalytic converter during operation of the engine is heated to very high temperatures. Before you touch it, make sure it has cooled down.

For more information on the construction and operation of the catalytic converter, see Chapter System reduce emissions and engine management.

Regularly check thermofilter for cracks, dents, loosening or loss of hardware.

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Remove thermofilter catalytic converter and check for cracks or other damage.
  2. If the catalytic converter must be replaced, the nuts give both its flanges, remove the rubber feet and remove the converter from the exhaust system (to remove the transmitter from the mounting studs is required to push the pipe sections of the system).
  3. Install in reverse order. Be sure to replace the gasket.
